Watch List DB imposes deadline
By Chantel Jennings
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The recruiting process can wear on a prospect, especially high-level recruits. That’s why Watch List defensive back Parrker Westphal (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) has decided on a timeline that’s different from a lot of other recruits.
Westphal plans to try and visit every school this summer in which there is serious mutual interest. By the end of July/beginning of August, he’ll stop taking suitors.
No matter if it’s Alabama, LSU or Auburn that comes knocking with an offer, if it’s past his deadline the door is closed.
“It gives me an opportunity to check out the options I already have,” Westphal said of the early personal deadline. “If they keep coming in, I will be nowhere in knowing where I want to go.”
The exact date is still TBD, his father Brian jokes, because Parrker is still a high schooler. But even narrowing to that point is a step in the right direction as they navigate the increasingly stressful recruiting process.
Also, by having a cutoff date, Westphal will be able to make sure he has ample time to really look at his options before making his final decision before his senior season.
“I want to just focus on my season and not have any distractions,” Westphal said. “[The process] didn’t really affect me, but it does take away some of your time.”
It comes as no surprise that some players might want to impose an early cutoff date. Westphal has seen interest since his freshman year. With 18 offers from schools such as Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Florida, Westphal will have his pick of the litter.
Westphal hopes to take a visit to Ann Arbor sometime this summer, though he was already in town for last year’s BBQ in the Big House. There are a few campuses he hasn’t been to yet, such as Arizona State and Vanderbilt, so those will be priorities. In April, Westphal will tour Florida.
