Watch List WR decommits from MSU
By Chantel Jennings
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Watch List wide receiver Drake Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) reopened his recruitment earlier this year, but didn’t officially decommit from Michigan State until Monday afternoon.
Despite the decommitment coming on the tails of three consecutive weekends visiting with Michigan coaches and players in Ann Arbor, Harris said the two aren’t related.
“I was already thinking about decommitting for a while,” Harris said. “I just thought it was time to do it.”
One of the main reasons why Harris initially chose Michigan State was because both football coach Mark Dantonio and basketball coach Tom Izzo had been open to the idea of Harris playing both sports for the Spartans.
But following his junior football season, Harris decided that his junior basketball season would be his last, as he only wanted to play football at the next level. That decision eventually led to his choice on Monday to decommit.
“I just felt like it wasn’t the right place for me to play football,” Harris said. “The reason why I was going there in the first place was because I was going to play basketball. And because that’s out of the equation now, I don’t think State is the right place for me for football.”
Currently, Harris said he has no leaders or top list and he’s open to hearing from more schools. He has 10-plus offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon and Florida State.
“I will probably make my decision around October because I’m going to enroll early,” Harris said. “Now, it’s just open to everything. Just have to see where I fit at now.”
