Michigan offers 2014 DL

By Tom VanHaaren

Michigan has already landed on defensive tackle in the 2014 class, and the Wolverines might be close to adding another. There is just a little twist with this prospect.

Brady Pallante (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) is in the 2014 class, but Michigan has offered him a greyshirt scholarship. That basically means that Pallante would not be a part of the 2014 class, but would enroll at Michigan in January of 2015.

"I'll be taking it as a 2015, so I'll be a greyshirt. Because of the numbers and the kids they have," he said. "Only a certain amount of kids are allowed to be on scholarship at once, and they had a large number of kids last year. If I commit there then I would sign on signing day, but wouldn't enroll right away."

That is a way for Michigan to get around the numbers initially, but still land a prospect they would like to add.

The coaching staff has seen Pallante in person a few times now. Wide receivers coach Jeff Hecklinski saw him last spring and then the coaches saw him once again at their summer camp this past year. The coaching staff liked what they saw and decided to offer Pallante, which was an offer he was waiting for.

"It's been a dream of mine to play at the University of Michigan. I would like to sit down with my parents tomorrow or the next couple days and make a decision," he said. "I'd like to talk to Coach (Brady) Hoke and discuss playing there. Hopefully commit to Michigan as soon as I can."

Pallante says that despite the offer being a greyshirt he doesn't see many opportunities better than this one. Even if a school were to offer him a scholarship for the 2014 class he says it would be hard to pass up the University of Michigan.
