Michigan signee taunted after comments
By Tom VanHaaren
Michigan signee Reon Dawson (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) recently told the Dayton Daily News in an interview that he was an Ohio State fan, despite his commitment to Michigan. That riled up the Wolverines fan base.
Dawson has been harassed and taunted by fans through social media for his comments, even though Dawson signed with Michigan on Wednesday.
"The weirdest thing I saw on twitter was that they hope Coach Hoke takes away my scholarship," he said. "One kid told me if I like Ohio State so much why don't I go there instead."
Dawson says the whole situation was a misunderstanding.
"At the end of the day I just really want to play football at Michigan where I committed," he said. "If I didn't want to be there then I would have stayed with Illinois where I was. I just want to play football."
Dawson said he has spoke to linebackers coach Mark Smith about his comment and it wasn't an issue with the coaching staff. The Michigan signee says that he also plans on talking to Michigan head coach Brady Hoke out of respect for his new coach.
He's now watching what he says in public forums and to reporters, because he isn't sure how his comments will be construed.
"I don't want to say anything else that will get turned into anything else," he said. "People are going to talk, so there's not much I can say now."
