It was a long trip to Baton Rouge, La., for 2014 cornerback Damon Webb (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech), but it certainly paid off.
Webb became the latest 2014 prospect to secure an offer from LSU during Day 3 of the Tigers' July camp. Webb finished up his workout for the LSU coaching staff Wednesday afternoon, and he had some time to share his thoughts on what is now his seventh scholarship offer.
"I wasn't expecting it, but I was hoping I would get an offer," Webb said. "I felt good, because LSU is a great school and they offered me -- that felt really good."
Webb's main contact with the Tigers is -- predictably -- defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, who has been busy on the recruiting trail since joining LSU from Nebraska this offseason.
LSU joins Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Toledo as the schools on Webb's offer list -- quite an impressive showing. But the Tigers are the first team to express interest in Webb on a national scale, and also the first SEC program to extend an offer. That brand name is something that stood out to the junior. And since LSU will be his last camp of the summer, it made a big final impression.
"The SEC -- that's a big conference, very competitive -- so I'm seriously considering it," he said.
Of course Webb is no stranger to LSU, as he has family in the area -- which makes his interest in LSU more understandable.
"It changes my thought process a lot because my mom is from Louisiana, so I've always been a big LSU fan," he said.
Webb wouldn't be the first Cass Tech prospect to wind up in Baton Rouge. Joseph Barksdale joined the Tigers from Detroit in 2007 as one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the country and started at offensive tackle for three seasons.
Signing day is still a ways off for Webb, however, and while he said he's happy to have the offer, he's not jumping to any conclusions.
"It changes my thought process, but right now I don't have any leaders or favorites," he said.
