Drake visits MSU; UM likely next

3/20/2012

MASSILLON, Ohio – Detroit Cass Tech sent seven players to FBS schools in the 2012 class and could match that number in 2013. The program is loaded beyond this upcoming class, too, and Deon Drake could be the headline of the 2014 class.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound outside linebacker is starting to garner interest from a handful of programs including the state’s top two programs, Michigan and Michigan State. Iowa, Notre Dame, Syracuse, UCLA and Western Michigan are also keeping tabs on Drake.

A few weekends ago, Drake made his first visit as a prospect to Michigan State. He previously went as part of a “family day.” One of his relatives studies at Michigan State, and Drake stayed on campus for a week.

This latest visit was more business than personal.

“We attended the basketball, had a nice tour, walked around and saw the views of the field,” Drake said. “Michigan State was pretty nice.”

Drake was planning to visit Michigan this past Saturday but traveled to Ohio to compete in the Nike SPARQ Combine. He will talk with his coaches at Cass Tech and try to reschedule his visit. He also missed a visit to Indiana the weekend of March 10.

“I was looking forward to the atmosphere of the school and what the coaches’ expectations are, how well the team practiced together, what can they do to make me better,” Drake said about the canceled Michigan visit.
