With three defensive line coaches on the Michigan staff, it's inevitable that there will be a focus on recruits along the defensive line. The 2012 class was filled with top prospects at defensive end and tackle, and the coaches would like to continue that into the 2013 class as well.
There have already been multiple offers out to top defensive prospects such as tackles Henry Poggi (Baltimore/Gilman) and Billy Price (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch), and defensive end Taco Charlton (Pickerington, Ohio/Central), among others.
There is now a new offer to add to that list as of last week.
Defensive end Jonathan Allen (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) says the Michigan coaching staff extended him an offer early last week.
"I think they offered around last Thursday," he said. "The defensive line coach, [Jerry] Montgomery came down to my school and told my coach."
The offer from the Wolverines adds to a list that already includes NC State, Boston College, Wake Forest, Stanford, Virginia and Tennessee, among others.
Since Allen isn't from the Midwest, he's not as familiar with the Michigan program as others locally. That won't deter him from learning more about what the Wolverines have to offer, though.
"I am definitely interested in Michigan," he said. "I've heard a couple things about them, and I know they have the winningest program and the biggest stadium. Plus distance is not a big concern for me."
Allen will likely take his time with his recruitment to see what comes of it and who ends up offering. He is also a starter on his high school's basketball team, so he's focused on the task at hand with his team.
"Since we're in basketball season I'm just going to see how everything goes," he said. "I would like to make my decision before the start of my senior year, but I'm not sure yet."
His versatility and athleticism along the line have made him a top prospect. At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Allen believes he can play either the weakside defensive spot, or stand up and play as an outside linebacker.
That versatility is most definitely something the Michigan coaches are after with Allen and their defense.
