ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan football team handily put away Iowa 42-17 behind an explosive performance from junior quarterback Devin Gardner. The victory capped the second consecutive perfect home season for Brady Hoke and gave the Wolverines' senior class its first win over the Hawkeyes.
Game ball goes to: Gardner. In just his third career start at quarterback, the junior carried the day. He accounted for six touchdowns -- three passing, three rushing. The offensive line had one of its better performances as it gave Gardner ample time in the pocket to complete 18 of 23 passes and throw for 314 yards.
It was over when: Michigan went into the locker room at halftime with an 18-point lead and all the momentum. With an 87-yard scoring drive with less than a minute left, the Wolverines took most of the remaining air out of the Hawkeyes.
Stat of the game: Six-for-six. Michigan scored touchdowns on each of its first six drives. Each drive was at least 60 yards long, and it was by far the most efficient the Wolverines have looked this season.
Surprise of the game: Denard Robinson not only played but played a fair amount. The senior quarterback, who injured his ulnar nerve against Nebraska, hadn’t been on the field for the Minnesota or Northwestern games, so naturally questions swirled regarding the senior day game against Iowa. But Hoke answered that on the first snap of the game with Robinson at running back. Then he played some wide receiver. Then he played quarterback (although he didn’t attempt a pass). All in all, Robinson ended his career in Michigan Stadium with a 98-yard performance, including a few of his ankle-breaking cuts.
What it means: Michigan moves on to Ohio State. The cheers of "Beat Ohio" began late in the third quarter and, because the Wolverines don't control their own fate in the Big Ten race, the best they can do is finish out the season with a win over their rival and hope that Nebraska drops the ball (over and over and over again) against Minnesota and Iowa.
