Michigan No. 1 seed in Midwest

March, 18, 2012
The Michigan hockey team received the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region and the No. 2 overall seed and will open play on Friday night in Green Bay, Wis., against Cornell.

The Wolverines (24-12-4) fell to Western Michigan, 3-2, Saturday night in the CCHA final. It was the second consecutive year they had been eliminated by the intrastate rival. The Broncos jumped out in front 3-0, and a furious rally by the Wolverines fell just short.

Cornell (18-8-7) is led by 6-foot-4 senior defenseman Sean Whitney. The Big Red, out of the ECAC, is considered a top defensive team. It's leading scorer is junior Greg Miller, who posted 30 points (14 goals, 16 assists).

The other half of the Midwest Region has No. 2 seed Ferris State (23-11-5) and No. 3 seed Denver (25-13-4).

The Michigan-Cornell game will be on ESPNU.
