An offer list of 17 programs that includes Arkansas, Stanford, USC, Notre Dame and Oklahoma would be an outstanding list for any senior prospect. That list, however, belongs to junior athlete Su'a Cravens (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta).
Cravens'recruitment has blown up quickly, and it came as a surprise to the 6-foot-1, 210-pound prospect.
"I really didn't expect to get that many scholarships this early, but to have 17 ... it's a blessing," he said.
The ESPNU 150 Watch List athlete is being recruited by some programs as a safety and as a running back by others. Either way Cravens says he just wants to help the team.
"I think I'm a defensive player at heart; playing offense is fun if you're in the right system," he said. "I don't have a problem playing either, but if I had to choose I would probably say defense."
With his recruitment off to a fast start, it has forced Cravens to take a look at every program in a different way. Rather than allowing his emotions to come into play, or who he was a fan of growing up, he's hoping to make a rational decision based on what's best for him.
"When I was growing up it was USC all the way," he said. "Once I got to high school, though, it started changing. It changes to who's recruiting you hard, or where you think you would fit best."
While he hasn't yet received an offer from the Wolverines, the Michigan coaching staff has been in contact with Cravens and plans to continue that in the near future.
"I've been getting a lot of mail from (Michigan)," he said. "I know they have Brady Hoke from San Diego State, and a whole new coaching staff. They have great players and a winning tradition."
Cravens interest in Michigan is partially out of curiosity for what Ann Arbor, and the Wolverines, have to offer.
"I'm curious about them, because I don't know as much about them as I do about other schools," he said. "I'd like to talk to the coaches more and get to know them better."
The coaching staff is well aware of how talented Cravens is. He says distance won't be an issue with him in his recruitment, and he would like to wait until signing day to make a decision, because he's a man of his word. He doesn't want to make a decision too soon and have to go back on that if anything out of the ordinary were to happen.
