It went down to the wire at Beaver Stadium. It wasn’t Michigan’s prettiest game, but there were some bright spots. Here are three guys who earned their wings/helmet stickers on Saturday:
DE Frank Clark. Clark has gained more than 50 pounds since he arrived on campus a few short years ago. And no, you couldn’t tell he had put on the pounds at all when he recovered a fumble and returned it 24 yards to pull Michigan within four points of Penn State in the third quarter. On top of that, he recovered another fumble, sacked Christian Hackenberg twice and had one pass breakup. Clark had been given high praise in the offseason and fall camp, but he hadn’t really shown much. On Saturday, we got a glimpse of the Frank Clark his teammates had bragged about. Now, if he can find that consistently he’ll be a very scary part of the Michigan defense.
LB James Ross III. Ross led the Wolverines with 10 tackles, including one for a loss. He also forced the fumble that Clark recovered and returned. He has been one of Michigan’s most consistent players this season and while he got beat a few times against Penn State, he still seems to be a player on whom the Wolverines can rely to turn up in big situations.
WR Devin Funchess. Yes, he dropped one pass in the end zone. But other than that he played a pretty clean game. He got the Wolverines started on the right note with a 59-yard touchdown catch and would finish the day with three more receptions, totaling 112 yards and two TDs. It was his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game.
Honorary helmet sticker: LB Jake Ryan. It’s always great to see a guy return after a devastating injury. Ryan, who tore his ACL during spring practice, got in on the action and tallied three tackles including one for a loss.
