Q&A: 4-star prospect Martin deciding soon

By William Wilkerson

AUSTIN, Texas -- Versatility is a trait widely admired by college programs, but one that doesn’t always come in the form of someone 6-foot-6 and 247 pounds.

Koda Martin’s size alone makes him an attractive prospect, but couple it with his ability to play on either side of the ball and it’s easy to see why the four-star recruit from Manvel, Texas, has close to 20 offers.

Martin, who is rated as the No. 21 offensive tackle and No. 43 player in the state of Texas, was in Austin on Saturday to get a better feel for one of those schools that offered him.

We caught up with Martin at the Texas State track and field meet to see how everything went with the visit with Texas, and where he stands overall.

Koda Martin
Four-star recruit Koda Martin has a final list of six schools and will decide this summer.
HornsNation: First things first, how was your visit with the Longhorns (on Saturday)?

Koda Martin: I got here this morning and talked with the coaches some. I had lunch then came out here to watch a high jumper we had competing. It was mainly just talking with the coaches. I had already seen the campus and everything.

HN: You’ve visited the campus before. Was there a lot of football talk going on this time around?

Martin: I got to talk to the defensive ends coach some and Coach [Stacy] Searels. I shook a bunch of their hands and we were able to talk some football stuff.

HN: You can play an array of different positions. Where does Texas want you?

Martin: Defensive end, primarily. If I eat my way into a tackle then I’ll play there. If I end up playing tight end then that is fine too. They might end up using me in some goal line tight end stuff also. It just depends.

HN: What is your preference for where you’d like to play?

Martin: I don’t really have a preference. I just love to play football. Whatever my body develops into is what I’ll play. Whatever the team needs me to win. I enjoy tackling people as a defensive end. I enjoy blocking people as a tackle, and catching and running people over as a tight end. Whatever the teams needs me to win is what I’ll play.

HN: You are now a nationally-recognized name in the recruiting world. What have the last few months been like?

Martin: It’s been nuts. It’s been crazy. About a year ago I got my first offer. Now I’ve got offers from people all over the country. It’s nuts.

HN: When will you really start to narrow things down?

Martin: I’ll probably commit somewhere early summer in about a month just to get it out of the way before my senior season.

HN: What schools will you be deciding from?

Martin: OU, Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor, Alabama and LSU.

HN: Where do all of these schools want you to play?

Martin: A&M wants me at tackle, they’d redshirt me. OU wants me at tight end. Baylor wants me at defensive end. Texas, wherever I’m at when I get here. Alabama, wherever I’m at when I get there.
