Texas 2014 QB Jones scores first offer

By Sam Khan Jr.

It's often said that the first offer is the hardest one to get for aspiring football prospects.

Fortunately for San Antonio East Central quarterback Jeremy Jones, the wait is over.

The 6-foot-6, 190-pound quarterback got his first scholarship offer on Wednesday night and it came from Rutgers.

When Jones called Rutgers quarterbacks coach Rob Spence, the news was delivered.

"I called him and he just told me that they were offering me but that I need to make sure I visit and that I show interest on this end since New Jersey is kind of far," Jones said.

The rising 2014 prospect said he fully intends to get to the Rutgers campus for a visit, hopefully in time for a spring practice. The Knights' spring game is April 27. If Jones is unable to make it to New Jersey on or before then, he said he'll make a point to get to campus in the summer.

Jones feels like there's plenty to like about Rutgers.

"After this season, they're going to the Big Ten, so that will be nice," Jones said. "They're getting a lot of publicity with that and they signed a pretty good recruiting class. I think they're about to take off. For them to be the first one to offer me, the first one to take a chance, it means a lot."

Other schools have shown interest in Jones. Early this month, he took a junior day trip to Texas A&M. Last weekend, he visited Louisiana-Lafayette for a junior day. LSU has hosted him for a visit and he said he plans to return on April 13 for another unofficial visit. Kansas State and Minnesota have also inquired about him recently.

On Friday, he'll head to Texas for an unofficial visit. He also said he plans to follow up with Texas A&M and place a call to quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital, who is recruiting him for the Aggies.
