LSU gets commitment No. 26
By Gary Laney
BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU picked up a commitment from a player most probably weren't thinking about at the start of the 2012 season.
Kevin Spears, a tall, athletic wide receiver from Holy Cross High in New Orleans, committed during an official visit to LSU's campus Saturday.
Spears, a 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, caught 60 passes for 1,060 yards in his senior season at Holy Cross. He committed to Louisiana Tech on Jan. 13 after a visit there, but was subsequently offered and invited to visit this weekend by LSU.
He's probably the least heralded recruit in the class, but is a textbook late bloomer. A basketball player most of his life, he didn't play football at his high school until his junior season and played sparingly while learning the ropes. He blossomed as a senior, not only putting up prolific numbers, but also impressing people with his size -- a need for the Tigers -- and his ball skills.
He's the fourth wide receiver committed, joining junior college transfer Quantavius Leslie, prep school prospect Avery Johnson and high school recruit John Diarse. Both Johnson and Diarse enrolled at LSU in the spring semester.
A few other commits like Rickey Jefferson and Jeryl Brazil, can also play wide receiver but both project to play defense.
