Christian Harris picks up new SEC interest

By Greg Ostendorf

ATLANTA -- Even though Ohio is the only school to offer Christian Harris to this point, that hasn’t stopped the elite programs from recruiting him. Alabama, Georgia and LSU have shown some type of interest in the versatile lineman.

The biggest surprise for Harris was when UA assistant coach Kirby Smart came by his school to see him.

“I was shocked,” Harris said. “I was like, ‘Is this Kirby Smart standing in front of me? I don’t want to mess up anything I say.' ”

Harris is listed as a defensive end, but most schools are recruiting him as an offensive tackle. That’s where he’s playing this week in the Rising Senior program. However, Smart likes the 6-foot-6, 259-pound prospect on defense.

“Originally they were kind of looking at me for offensive tackle, but he saw my frame and saw my body, and he said he might have to get the defensive line coach up here,” Harris said.

The Georgia native, who participated in camps at Auburn and Vanderbilt during the summer, took in multiple UGA games during the season. While in Athens, Ga., he got a chance to meet Dawgs head coach Mark Richt.

“They brought me in the locker room one day before a game, and I met Mark Richt and Coach [Will] Friend, the offensive line coach,” Harris said. “They said that I was kind of high up on the list for people they were looking out for to offer.”

Interest from LSU has also picked up recently.

“Frank Wilson from LSU, he sent me a hand-written letter, saying he wants me to come down to junior day,” Harris said.

The next offer could come from Georgia Tech, who also wants Harris to visit for a junior day. The 2014 prospect says he wants to try and attend junior days at Alabama, Georgia Tech and LSU in the coming months.
