LSU offers Cethan Carter, Duke Riley

By Gary Laney

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Cethan Carter and Duke Riley  won state championships last weekend with their suburban New Orleans high schools.

A little less than a week later, they both have offers for scholarships from LSU. Both offers would have them greyshirting, meaning they would pay their own way to school in the fall semester, then join the team in spring 2014.

Carter, a 2013 tight end/fullback out of Metairie's Archbishop Rummel High School, got his offer according to his coach, Jay Roth.

Riley, a four-star 2013 linebacker from River Ridge's John Curtis High School, sent out news of his offer from his Twitter account.

The tweet exclaimed, "Just Got Offered From LSU!!!!"

The two had outstanding senior seasons on outstanding teams, but an LSU offer might be considered a surprise for both. Carter's name rose after he led Rummel to an unbeaten season and the 5A state title with a 35-14 win over Lake Charles' Barbe High School, which features LSU tight end commit Desean Smith on Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Earlier on the same Saturday, Riley returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown to lead Curtis to a 35-13 win over Shreveport Evangel for the Class 2A title, also at the Superdome. Curtis also finished undefeated and is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the ESPN 25 Power Rankings.

Riley's name rose as the season went on. He wasn't an unknown by any stretch, but his offer sheet was led by Ole Miss, TCU and Tulane.
