What we learned: Week 7

By Ivan Maisel

Here are three lessons learned in LSU's win over Florida.

1. Ground and pound: LSU might have learned how to throw but the Tigers haven’t forgotten how to play the smashmouth style that served them so well over the last five seasons. Offensive balance is every coach’s dream, and Les Miles made it clear he likes both styles.

2. Both lines are good: The Tigers exposed Florida’s limitations on both sides of the ball. The offensive line took advantage of the Gators’ lack of depth on the front seven, and the defensive line shone a spotlight on the ordinariness of Florida’s offensive front. In fact, the LSU defense, which lost so many players to the NFL and struggled for the first month of the season, might have established a beachhead Saturday.

3. Title hopes remain: LSU remained a player in the BCS Championship picture. The Tigers weathered a bruising game Saturday before facing longtime rival Ole Miss next week. But the Rebels are coming off a trifecta of at Alabama, at Auburn, and home against Texas A&M. After Ole Miss, LSU plays Furman and has a week off before it travels to Tuscaloosa. That will give the Tigers plenty of time to rest and to prepare for their nemesis, the No. 1 Crimson Tide.
