Vitals: QB Hayden Rettig, Los Angeles/Cathedral, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds
Committed: May 22
ESPN.com grade: 83. Four-star prospect
Picked LSU over: Roughly a dozen other offers from across the country, including Arizona, Auburn, Purdue and UCLA. Hometown school UCLA is believed to be the strongest competitor to the Tigers for Rettig's services.
State of the position: LSU is going to get one more season out of Zach Mettenberger, as well as last-minute transfer backup Rob Bolden. With Stephen Rivers manning the primary backup role, it's a good bet Rettig gets the chance to redshirt during his freshman season. When Mettenberger and Bolden depart after 2013, Rettig and fellow 2013 quarterback commitment Anthony Jennings should have an early opportunity to compete for the starting job.
Pros: Rettig showed the ability to bomb away in helping Cathedral to the state semifinals during his senior season. Rettig "shows good anticipation and understanding on route concepts and will throw the ball before the receiver breaks," according to the ESPN Scouting Report. The senior routinely eclipsed 300 and 400-yard performances during the Phantoms' run to the state playoffs.
Cons: Showed tendency to get pick-happy against high caliber defenses. In Cathedral's 45-7 season-ending loss to district rival Chaminade, Rettig tossed four interceptions and didn't manage to throw for 200 yards against a stingy defense. Many schools were hesitant to recruit Rettig because of an ACL injury suffered shortly into his junior season in 2011, but he has looked well-recovered during his senior campaign.
Expected impact: LSU has made no bones about it with its quarterback recruitment this year: either Rettig or his competitor Jennings -- or knowing Les Miles, both -- will be the quarterback of the future in Baton Rouge. With three quarterbacks above him in 2013, it doesn't seem plausible that Rettig will contribute much as a freshman. But it stands to reason Rettig will enter his second season with an eye on the starting job, and he could potentially earn it at a young age if he bests Rivers and Jennings.
