LSU has numbers at all the positions where it is losing transfers, according to the roster the team updated Wednesday.
Luke Muncie was one of four linebackers to start games at the strong side linebacker spot -- and the other three return.Tahj Jones, who was academically ineligible for the season after he emerged from last spring as the starter, is back in the fold and will battle rising sophomores Kwon Alexander and Lamar Louis for the starting job.
Projected starter: Jones will have to work to hold off Alexander, who was impressive before his injury.
If there is a position where there is a gaping hole, it would be where Chris Davenport played at left tackle. Not that he figured to be a factor. Davenport was consistently listed on the two-deep at left tackle last season -- but LSU started three different left tackles and twice chose another player to shuffled into the first team ahead of him. LSU has lost all three players who started games at left tackle last year, and now Davenport as well. Left guard La'el Collins could be a candidate to moved there, along with a number of tackles, including 2012 starting right tackle Vadal Alexander.
Projected starter: My gut tells me Collins makes the move to left tackle. The Tigers have some depth of quality guards, so it could afford to move Collins to the edge.
Paul Turner got lost behind LSU's five-man rotation of wide receivers, four of whom return next year. His chances of playing time would have been even more slim with LSU bringing in junior college transfers (Quantavius Leslie) and with the return of Travin Dural, a talented freshman, from an injury that cut short what had been an impressive August camp.
Jerrard Randall never took a snap at quarterback, getting relegated to scout team while Stephen Rivers, who was part of the 2011 signing class along with Randall, became the Tigers' second-team quarterback. The addition of commits Anthony Jennings and Hayden Rettig will give LSU five scholarship quarterbacks even without Randall.
Commits: Jennings, Rettig.
