BATON ROUGE, La. -- By going on the road and beating a top 25 team Saturday, LSU simply stood its ground.

With all the teams ranked ahead of it also winning, LSU remained No. 6 in the BCS rankings released Sunday night. The 7-1 Tigers beat then-No. 18 Texas A&M 24-19 Saturday at College Station, Texas, giving the Tigers' resume a needed quality win.

But with No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Kansas State, No. 4 Oregon, and No. 5 Notre Dame also all winning, the Tigers could not parlay the win into a higher ranking. The Tigers, ranked No. 6 in both major polls, will have their chance to move up when they host Alabama and No. 11 Mississippi State on back-to-back weeks after their bye this week.

LSU's resume includes three games against ranked opponents, all in the last three weeks:
  • A win at No. 20 Texas A&M (Saturday)
  • A win vs. No. 13 South Carolina (Oct. 13)
  • A loss at No. 2 Florida (Oct. 6)

LSU's upcoming schedule includes several chances to knock off top teams:
  • No. 1 Alabama in Baton Rouge (Nov. 3)
  • No. 11 Mississippi State in Baton Rouge (Nov. 10)
  • An SEC East opponent -- possibly No. 2 Florida or No. 10 Georgia -- in the SEC championship game (Dec. 1).

LSU also has conference games against Ole Miss at Tiger Stadium and at Arkansas.

The Tigers were preseason No. 1 in the USA Today poll, but dropped after Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu was kicked off the team, and dropped to No. 6 when it lost at Florida, 14-6. The Tigers remain the highest-ranked one-loss team and is the only team out of the top nine that could possibly play both of the top two teams by season's end.
