Tony Brown's last-minute stop at LSU

10/2/2012

One of the best came last to take in LSU's campus for the Tigers' final non-conference game this weekend.

While LSU no-showed against Towson on Saturday night, 2014 defensive back Tony Brown (Beaumont, Texas/Ozen) almost pulled a no-show of his own. Brown arrived at Tiger Stadium with only minutes to spare after making the three-hour drive from Beaumont.

"I got there like 10 minutes before the game, and then I stayed the night with some family. Me and my sister and my quarterback came down," Brown said.

Brown was one of the biggest names on a relatively small list of visitors for LSU's date against an FCS foe. It might seem odd for the junior to drive in for such a small-stakes game, but Brown said it was purely a logistical decision.

"We play on Fridays and Saturdays, but this week we played on Friday," he said. "I had a free Saturday, so I was like, 'I might as well go to one of their games.' "

The lateness of his arrival meant Brown didn't get to spend any time with LSU coaches prior to kickoff. He had to wait through an ugly 16-point win against Towson before he could do that.

"They won and came through in the end, but they looked pretty shaky," Brown said.

Once the visiting Tigers were taken care of, though, the LSU coaches were available to Brown -- quite a few of them, actually.

"I talked to all my coaches after the game, they came in and talked to me in the recruiting lounge," he said. "I talked to Coach Miles and Coach Henry; Coach Haley and Coach Raymond; Coach McGaughy and Coach Wilson."

That's no surprise to Brown, who is quite familiar with Baton Rouge and the Tigers' staff after taking several trips to campus during the past few summers. He'll have a chance to get much more familiar in the coming weeks, though. Brown said he hopes to be back in two weeks for LSU's home date against South Carolina, and he said he'll definitely be in town for the Alabama game.
