Odoh commits to Tigers

9/4/2012

LSU landed its second basketball commitment in one day when 6-foot-11 Hill College center John Odoh chose to commit to LSU on Monday.

Odoh, a native of Nigeria, originally signed with North Texas last spring, but got out of the letter of intent after head coach Johnny Jones left UNT for LSU. Odoh was unsuccessful in an attempt to become academically eligible to play for the Tigers in summer school and had to return to junior college.

His juco coach, Swede Trenkle, confirmed the commitment via email Monday night.

"He is very excited to attend school at LSU," Trenkle said. Odoh plans to enroll at LSU in the spring but not play, then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Odoh will give a small LSU team a much-needed inside presence. He averaged 14.3 rebounds and 4.7 blocked shots a game as a sophomore at Hill in 2011-12. The Tigers have little inside depth on their current roster with only one recruited true post player in sophomore Johnny O'Bryant.

Odoh is a second inside player committed to LSU on Monday after Australian forward Deng Deng committed earlier in the day. Like Odoh, Deng is coming from a Texas junior college (Lee) and like Odoh, he originally hails from Africa (Sudan). LSU, which has an 11-man roster for 2011-12 with three seniors, has five scholarships to give for the 2013 signing class.
