When Johnny Jones took the men's basketball job at LSU several weeks ago, he said he planned on bringing in three assistants to fill out the coaching aspect of his staff.

Jones brought on two of those three coaches last week when he announced the hirings of Shawn Forrest and Charlie Leonard from his old staff at North Texas. On Tuesday, the last piece of the puzzle came into view, as Jones announced the hiring of former Georgetown assistant Robert Kirby.

Reports began to surface last Friday that Kirby had made the switch from John Thompson III's staff to LSU, and Jones made it official in a press release Tuesday afternoon.

“Coach Kirby will be a great addition to our basketball staff here at LSU,” said Jones in the release. “He has a strong knowledge of the game. He is a great teacher on the floor and developer of players. With his ability as one of the top recruiters in the country, he will be very beneficial for our basketball program moving forward.”

Kirby might have spent the past two seasons in Washington D.C., but he is quite familiar with basketball in the southeast. Kirby brings more than 27 years of experience to the position, including 15 years over two jobs at Mississippi State -- one from 1990-93, and a 12-year stint under former Bulldogs coach Rick Stansbury from 1998-2010.

Prior to that, Kirby worked for Arkansas-Pine Bluff from 1985-88, and he has some familiarity with Louisiana after a one-year stop at Southeastern Louisiana in 1988-89.

Kirby was named one of the nation's top 25 basketball recruiters in 2005 after he helped Mississippi State land a star-studded class which included the likes of Monta Ellis, Jamont Gordon, Vernon Goodridge and Richard and Reginald Delk.
