What we learned: Week 5

ATHENS, Ga. -- Here are three things we learned about No. 6 LSU in Saturday's 44-41 loss to No. 9 Georgia.

Back to drawing board for Chavis: The last time LSU surrendered at least 40 points in a game? That was 2008, when Georgia hung 52 on the Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Georgia scored 44 on Saturday, ending a string of 63 games in which opponents failed to score 40 or more against the Tigers. John Chavis has presided over some ridiculously productive defenses since taking over as a Les Miles assistant in 2009, but this rebuilding group has lots of work to do before it comes anywhere near the nastiness of its recent predecessors. Georgia rolled up 494 yards on Saturday and made it look easy far too often.

Mett's for real: He was outstanding throughout, but LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger was ridiculously good on third downs Saturday. The senior went 7-for-11 for 168 yards and three touchdowns on third down alone. That includes a 25-yard completion to Odell Beckham Jr. on third-and-22 during the Tigers' go-ahead touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. This season, Mettenberger's Total QBR is 98.0 on third down, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. In other words, he has been nearly perfect.

Landry, Beckham deserve the hype: If there is a wide receiver combo better than Beckham and Jarvis Landry in the country, I'd like to see it. Sure, Beckham made a crucial mistake when he lost a fumbled punt, but he was otherwise brilliant as a receiver and return man, finishing with 289 all-purpose yards (118 receiving, 171 on kick returns) against Georgia. And Landry was open seemingly all game, notching 10 catches for 156 yards and a touchdown -- his seventh straight game with a scoring catch. Mettenberger was good on Saturday, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have two such high-caliber receivers to target.
