Helmet stickers: Week 3

September, 15, 2013
BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU accumulated 571 yards of offense, averaging 10.4 yards per play -- the second-highest figure in school history -- in its 45-13 thumping on Kent State on Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

Plenty were worthy, but here are the recipients of weekly helmet stickers:

QB Zach Mettenberger: Mettenberger, alongside his offensive teammates, is playing his first year in Cam Cameron’s system, but it’s his second as the LSU starter -- and the difference is night and day. The senior threw three more touchdown passes against Kent State, giving him a school-record nine (with no interceptions) through the Tigers’ opening three games. He was calm under pressure and accurate on short and deep balls.

DT Ego Ferguson: Without a start under his belt before this season, Ferguson set a lofty goal to rank among the best players at his position nationally this season. He looked the part on Saturday with a team-high eight tackles. Included was a 15-yard sack in the first quarter that pinned Kent State at its 1-yard line, forcing a punt that led to a short field and an LSU touchdown. At 6-foot-3 and 309 pounds, he’s a force that’s here to stay.

WR Jarvis Landry: This honor went to fellow wideout Odell Beckham Jr. last week. He could have received it again after catching a team-high five throws for 76 yards and a touchdown while fighting through a finger injury. But let’s go with his good friend Landry, who snagged two touchdown receptions and finished with 66 yards on four catches. Landry’s 21-yard TD catch in the first quarter bailed the Tigers out of a third-and-20 hole. He is the first LSU player with a touchdown reception in five consecutive games since Dwayne Bowe in 2006.
