LSU Tigers

Yet another 2013 prospect picked up an offer from LSU in what has been a busy week for the Tigers' coaching staff.

The most recent name the Tigers have passed an offer to is Beau Sandland, a junior college tight end from Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Calif. The monstrous 6-foot-5, 250-pound prospect caught wind of his offer on the same day as Marietta, Ga., offensive guard Brandon Kublanow. Sandland said he caught wind of the good news from LSU tight ends coach Steve Ensminger.

Much like Kublanow, Sandland said the offer came as a bit of a surprise, since the Tigers have not really been on his radar so far this spring.

LSU received a commitment Thursday from a Texas running back.

The pledge gives the Tigers 10 commitments for 2013 and adds an explosive offensive threat as well as their first true running back in the class.

Adam Taylor, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound running back from Texas powerhouse Katy High, committed to the Tigers after a junior season that was marred by a season-ending knee injury in the season's first game.

LSU center Justin Hamilton, who surprised many when he decided to leave LSU a year early to try a pro career, is ranked No. 70 on ESPN's Chad Ford's top 100 players in the NBA draft.

If that holds true, he'd be out of the 60-pick draft (two rounds per team) and would be a free agent.

The Class of 2016 will have new NCAA academic requirements for initial eligibility. Among the changes will be the creation of an "academic redshirt," for athletes who meet some, but not all, initial eligibility requirements. This is similar to, but not the same as, the old "partial qualifier."

It'll be interesting to see how this eventually affects the SEC.

Five things to know: Defensive backs

With spring football and the NFL draft in the books, here are five things to know about LSU's secondary:

[+] Enlarge
Eric Reid
Butch Dill/Getty ImagesEric Reid (1) might be taken in the first round of the NFL draft in 2013.
1. LSU's still DBU: For the second straight year, LSU had the NFL draft's first selected defensive back when cornerback Morris Claiborne went No. 6 overall to the Dallas Cowboys a year after Patrick Peterson went No. 5 overall to the Arizona Cardinals.

Claiborne, safety Brandon Taylor (third round, Chargers) and cornerback Ron Brooks (fourth round, Bills) became the first trio of LSU defensive backs to be selected in the same draft since the 1960s, when the AFL and NFL held separate drafts. And LSU has had defensive backs selected in six straight drafts, including first-rounders Claiborne, Peterson and LaRon Landry (No. 6 overall pick in 2007 by Washington).

So LSU's place as a producer of NFL-quality DB talent has never been stronger. Already, ESPN's Todd McShay has projected safety Eric Reid as a first-rounder for next year. So don't expect the NFL-quality defensive backs coming out of Baton Rouge to end any time soon.

LSU sends offer to ESPN 150 OT

There are few big-time programs yet to offer four-star Ethan Pocic (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), and one of the most successful programs over the last decade became the latest to offer the ESPN 150 offensive tackle.

LSU assistant coach Greg Studrawa sent Pocic a Facebook message Tuesday to call him. When Pocic called, Studrawa let him know the Tigers were throwing their name in the hat for the 6-foot-6, 285-pound junior.

“It’s just crazy. They’re in the national championship like all the time,” Pocic said of LSU, which has been in three BCS title games in the last nine years. “They just were saying they love my tape, want to come in [to Lemont] and meet me and see me and stuff like that.”

Kublanow intrigued by LSU offer

The news Brandon Kublanow heard Monday night perhaps shouldn't have come as a surprise, but it did.

Kublanow (Marietta, Ga./Walton) is no stranger to scholarship offers at this stage of the recruiting cycle. He has received them from the likes of Georgia, Florida, Clemson, Miami and South Carolina, to name a few. But when he was visited at school by LSU offensive line coach Greg Studrawa, he thought he might be in line for one more.

"Their O-line coach came to see me, so I figured it might be coming," he said. "But I haven't really talked to (LSU) all that much, so it was pretty exciting."

When Johnny Jones took the men's basketball job at LSU several weeks ago, he said he planned on bringing in three assistants to fill out the coaching aspect of his staff.

Jones brought on two of those three coaches last week when he announced the hirings of Shawn Forrest and Charlie Leonard from his old staff at North Texas. On Tuesday, the last piece of the puzzle came into view, as Jones announced the hiring of former Georgetown assistant Robert Kirby.

Reports began to surface last Friday that Kirby had made the switch from John Thompson III's staff to LSU, and Jones made it official in a press release Tuesday afternoon.

Lewis Neal is no longer an Ohio State commitment.

“I've opened up my recruitment,” the three-star linebacker prospect from Wilson (N.C.) Hunt told ESPN on Tuesday morning.

Neal, who committed to the Buckeyes on April 23 said coaches in Columbus are aware of his new stance.

By the time the dust settled on the 2012 NFL draft, LSU saw five of its former players selected during the course of the weekend. The overall haul of Tigers going into the NFL wasn't much of a surprise -- LSU has been one of the top suppliers of pro talent for the better part of a decade now.

But looking over the LSU draftees provides one interesting insight: they are getting younger. Of the five players drafted in 2012, three of them were juniors. Additionally, those three underclassmen were drafted first. This goes against a trend of seniority during Les Miles' tenure in Baton Rouge, in which many of the Tigers' top NFL prospects like Joseph Addai, Dwayne Bowe, Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson chose to exhaust their eligibility.

That's not to say the Tigers aren't used to losing underclassmen to the draft, but it certainly seems to be more prevalent recently, as LSU's highest-drafted player in each of the last three drafts has been a junior.

Only five of LSU's NFL hopefuls made it into the seven rounds of the NFL draft, but plenty more were involved in a flurry of free agent activity during the weekend.

Following the draft's conclusion Saturday night, NFL teams began contacting valued undrafted players about signing free agent contracts. To date, eight LSU players have joined the professional ranks as undrafted free agents, the school announced Monday morning.

Several of those players will be joining their draft pick counterparts. Both center T-Bob Hebert and tight end Deangelo Peterson signed with the St. Louis Rams, who drafted defensive tackle Michael Brockers 14th overall Thursday night.

After San Diego drafted Brandon Taylor in the third round Friday night, the Chargers signed quarterback Jarrett Lee to a free agent deal. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also picked up multiple LSU products, as they signed both linebacker Ryan Baker and quarterback Jordan Jefferson to contracts.

Defensive end Kendrick Adams signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and guard Will Blackwell signed with the Carolina Panthers. Fullback James Stampley has been invited to a free agent tryout with the Seattle Seahawks.

Rapid Reaction: Georgia 5, LSU 3

No. 6 LSU made another run at a late-inning rally Sunday in an attempt to sweep Georgia, but it fell just short. Quick thoughts from the Tigers' loss.

Overview: LSU (35-10, 14-7) cruised through the early innings behind a strong early showing from starter Aaron Nola. The freshman didn't allow a hit to the Bulldogs (25-20, 9-12) through the first three innings, and LSU's hitters took advantage of Georgia mistakes for an early lead. Mason Katz crossed the plate twice in the first three innings -- once on a wild pitch, and again after a throwing error from the catcher -- for an early 2-0 lead.

Nola fell apart in the fourth, inning however, and the Bulldogs took full advantage. Georgia teed off on the youngster to the tune of six hits and four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI home run from designated hitter Justin Bryan.

Brooks rounds out Day 3 picks

LSU couldn't maintain its weekend trend of earning two draft picks, as the Tigers mustered just one more pick in the 2012 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon.

Ron Brooks
Derick E. Hingle/US PresswireRon Brooks was selected by Buffalo in the fourth round of the NFL draft.
That honor went to Ron Brooks, who didn't have to wait too long in Saturday's marathon, which covered rounds four through seven. Brooks was taken 29th in the fourth round (124th overall) by the Buffalo Bills. Brooks' fantastic numbers at this winter's NFL combine undoubtedly helped boost his draft stock. The former dime back didn't manage much time as a starter in Baton Rouge, but he made up for the lack of playing time with a jaw-dropping 4.37 40-yard dash at the combine.

Buffalo is slowly becoming a bit like LSU-North in recent years. Much like the New England Patriots, who seem to continually look at Tiger prospects, the Bills now feature three LSU alums on their defense. In addition to Brooks, Buffalo drafted former LSU linebacker Kelvin Sheppard 68th overall last spring, and they drafted Tiger DT Kyle Williams in the fifth round of the 2006 draft.

No other Tigers heard their names called in the remaining three rounds of the draft, giving LSU a total of five players drafted in 2012. Interestingly enough, that number is the lowest total for LSU since 2007. Five LSU players were drafted in 2007, which was also the last time LSU had multiple first round picks before Morris Claiborne and Michael Brockers were taken in the first round Thursday night.

The draft might have ended with just five players taken, but several more LSU prospects were involved in a flurry of free agent activity on Saturday night.

Rapid Reaction: LSU 8, Georgia 4

The eighth inning was once again kind to LSU (35-9, 14-6) in its weekend series with Georgia. Quick thoughts from the Tigers' series-clinching win.

Overview: Similar to the Friday opener, both offenses jumped out to a fast start. The Bulldogs (24-20, 8-12) opened the game with a 2-0 lead after leadoff hitter Curt Powell took the second pitch of the evening deep for a home run, followed by a sacrifice fly from left fielder Conor Welton. The Tigers managed three hits of their own in the first frame, with Mason Katz doubling to score JaCoby Jones, followed by an Austin Nola sacrifice fly to tie the score.

LSU settled into a funk from the second inning to the seventh, however, as the Tiger lineup knocked just three more hits in those five frames. The Bulldogs didn't set the world on fire themselves -- they had seven hits on the night. But Peter Verdin and Brett DeLoach did just enough to grab the lead in the third inning, as they each knocked an RBI single to take a 4-2 lead.

Two Tigers taken on Day 2 of draft

Rueben Randle and Brandon Taylor joined first rounders Morris Claiborne and Michael Brockers as members of LSU's 2012 draft class. Randle was drafted by the New York Giants, while Taylor joined the San Diego Chargers. The timing of the pair's selections was a bit surprising, however, as both prospects waited longer than many had projected.

Randle was considered by many a possible first round pick, and he was one of 26 invitees to attend the draft at Radio City Music Hall. Despite that, Randle waited until the last pick of the second round -- going 63rd overall as the final pick of the second round. The drop alone wasn't the only surprising thing -- it was Randle's spot in the pecking over. The junior was considered by some to be one of the draft's three or four best prospects at wide receiver. But by the time the Giants called him, he was the ninth receiver off the board.

Some, including Todd McShay, projected Taylor as a potential second round pick, but the former Tigers' safety dipped into the early portion of the third round. The San Diego Chargers took Taylor 10th in the third round and 73rd overall. He was the fourth safety off the board in a draft that didn't see a lot of demand for ballhawks. After Alabama's Mark Barron and Notre Dame's Harrison Smith went in the first round, only Illinois safety Tavon Wilson went ahead of Taylor, as he was taken 48th in the second round.

No other Tigers went on Friday night, but there was bit of local interest in the New Orleans Saints' 89th overall pick of Akiem Hicks of the University of Regina. Hicks was committed to play for LSU in 2009, but he never had a chance to suit up for the Tigers. Violations in Hicks' recruitment led to a year of probation for the program, as well as the dismissal of former wide receivers coach DJ McCarthy.

With Taylor and Randle's selections, the four primary LSU prospects in this draft class have been taken. But there are still several Tigers in play as the draft enters its later rounds. Ron Brooks, Deangelo Peterson, Ryan Baker, Jordan Jefferson, Jarrett Lee and Will Blackwell are all guys who will be hoping to hear their names called in rounds four through seven on Saturday.
