DE Trent Harris closing in on decision
By Derek Tyson
WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Defensive end Trent Harris (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) originally was set to announce his college destination before his spring game on Thursday night, but an offer from Ohio State caused the talented pass-rusher to delay his decision.
The 6-foot-2, 230-pound athlete said he just decided to enjoy the process and slow things down.
"A lot of schools started coming in and I just wanted to open it up and just make sure I make the right choice for my future and just enjoy the time," Harris said. "Because not a lot of people have this opportunity and I just want to take advantage of it.
"I was always thinking about delaying it, but when that offer came in, it just made me stop and think. I just want to enjoy the experience. It's a powerhouse football team. Urban Meyer is the head coach and I know they are going to win some games."
Harris, who holds offers from Florida, Miami, Alabama and Ohio State, picked up another offer from South Carolina on Thursday morning.
"It's another SEC school," Harris said. "Coach [Steve] Spurrier is obviously a great coach. I'm just going to take my time and look at all the places and make my decision soon."
Harris claims no official leader but said there are a few schools that in his head are standing out to him.
"Florida and Georgia are up there, then Ohio State and Alabama and the rest of them," Harris said. "I just want to take a look at them and then come up with a top five in a few weeks."
Harris thinks he would fit well in Georgia's defensive scheme.
"I went up there on a visit and I just felt comfortable," Harris said. "I talked to the outside linebacker coach there and we talked about the defensive scheme and I felt like I fit in good there. I also like the environment around there."
Florida, located only an hour and a half from Harris' home, appears to have the early advantage.
"Oh man, it's just a dream school," Harris laughed. "I just feel like I should be there. I don't know."
As for when he will make his final decision, Harris said it will likely come soon.
"It's just going to hit me," he said, "and that's where I'm going to go."
