Respect for UGA high with 2015 DT
By Damon Sayles
When 2015 defensive tackle T.D. Moton (Shreveport, La./Calvary Baptist Academy) picked up an offer from Georgia on Thursday, he thought about of a lot of things. He thought about the program’s five national championships and 12 SEC titles. He thought about quarterback Aaron Murray and defensive lineman John Jenkins, two figureheads for the Bulldogs.
Those are names of the present. What first caught Moton’s mind upon getting the offer was a Bulldog of the past -- a player some consider the greatest to put on a Georgia uniform.
“I thought of Herschel Walker,” Moton said, referring to the 1982 Heisman Trophy-winning running back who went on to have a productive pro career. “He was just a freak of nature at the running back position.
“I like his character. I heard that a lot of people talked about him when he was younger, and people messed with him, so he started working out. Now, look at him. He’s got a good mind, and he’s not easily going to back down.”
Recruited by Georgia receivers coach Tony Ball, Moton hopes to have a college career similar to Walker’s one day. Counting Georgia, the 6-foot-4, 310-pound defensive tackle now has five offers -- three of the five from SEC schools. Georgia, Ole Miss and Mississippi State have offered, as have Baylor and Houston. Schools such as Alabama, Tennessee, Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin have shown growing interest.
“It feels real good. I didn’t think this would happen as a sophomore,” Moton said. “I never really expected the [Georgia] offer, and I’m grateful for Coach Ball.”
Moton said he is looking to take an unofficial visit to Georgia either sometime in July or sometime early during the school year.
