UGA evaluates in-state safety Albright
By Kipp Adams
ACWORTH, GA – The evaluation period is intended for assistant coaches to hit the road to check out potential future additions for their program. While sometimes the stops can be more about being seen than actual evaluation, that was not the case for safety Cameron Albright (Acworth, Ga./North Cobb) on Thursday.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound defensive back looked over his shoulder during warmups to see University of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and secondary coach Scott Lakatos. The two assistants eyed Albright’s every move for over an hour.
Following practice, Albright expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to audition in front of the Georgia coaching staff.
“It was an honor to know they took the time to come out here and see me,” Albright said. “I had to pick up my intensity and try to impress them and show them what they want to see. They said I can cover fine but they wanted to see my tackling ability because I was not in a position to make a lot of tackles on my junior film. They want to see if I can come up and strike somebody. I know I can make an open-field tackle or in the hole, but you can always get better.”
Georgia has one safety committed in four-star prospect Nick Glass (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge). But a need to sign two, combined with Glass looking around and his possible future growth into a linebacker, has the Bulldogs looking for more help. Albright places a lot of value on a scholarship offer from the in-state SEC program.
“A Georgia offer would carry a lot of weight because that was my favorite team growing up and my mom and dad went there,” Albright said. “It is the home state team so it would mean a lot to me. I visited there for their first practice but if they offer, I would like to go back and spend more time with Coach Grantham and Coach Lakatos. An offer and a good visit would put them up there in my top five.”
Regardless of whether or not Georgia offers, it has been a good week for Albright. Texas Tech and NC State offered on Monday, Wisconsin offered Tuesday and Georgia Tech offered Thursday night. Two programs in his top five have also told him they plan to come see him this month to evaluate him for an offer.
“I have a top five of Ole Miss, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and FSU,” Albright said. “Ole Miss and FSU are supposed to come see me this spring and might offer.”
Albright would like to take a trip to North Carolina to see the Tar Heels, as well as Wake Forest and NC State. He'll possibly take trops to West Virginia and Wisconsin as well. Depending on how the next month goes, Albright could have some new options to choose from when he makes his commitment this summer.
“I will take a look to see if any new offers affect my top five and I would like to make my decision around June 17-19," Albright said.
