ESPN 150 OG names a favorite
By Radi Nabulsi
ATHENS, Ga. –- When ESPN 150 running back Sony Michel committed to Georgia on Friday, live on ESPNU, Bulldogs fans were overjoyed. Those who were following another top prospect, ESPN 150 offensive guard Isaiah Wynn (St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood Senior), were beside themselves when he tweeted shortly after the announcement, “I guess I'm going to be blocking for Sony Michael.!! #DawgsOnTop.”
Wynn was kidding of course, but like any good joke there was a kernel of truth in his tweet.
“That was a joke but I really do like Georgia,” Wynn said. “I can really see myself playing there for Coach [Will] Friend and Coach [Mark] Richt.”
The 6-foot-2, 270-pound junior hesitated to say the Bulldogs were his leader.
“Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida, Ole Miss and Auburn are recruiting me the hardest,” Wynn said. “Out of all of them I would say Georgia is standing out the most.”
That could be due in part to a conversation Wynn had with Richt last week.
“I talked to Coach Richt last Thursday night,” Wynn said. “It was the first night of the draft. We talked about 30 minutes and 10 minutes of it was really about football. The rest was about life and their program. He told me about himself and his family. He told me they had some guys going in the draft. He told me to watch all the linemen that were getting drafted. It surprised me to see most of the first round filled up with offensive linemen.”
The Bulldogs could lose three linemen to the NFL draft next year, so Richt needs to replace them.
“Georgia is looking at me playing guard and center,” Wynn said. “I have been getting some snaps at center to get better at it and I will be playing that some this season but this spring I will be playing guard.”
Right now it appears Wynn likely won't play either position in the state of Florida, despite having offers from four schools in the Sunshine State.
“My mom right now is intent on leaving the state,” he said. “I didn’t plan on staying in state from the jump. Things could change, something may catch my eye, but as far as I know right now I plan on leaving the state.”
I guess I'm going to be blocking for Sony Michael.!! #DawgsOnTop.
