CB Watkins discusses newest SEC offer
By Damon Sayles
ESPN Watch List defensive back Nick Watkins (Dallas/Bishop Dunne) understands that the SEC has some of the most talented defensive backs in the country. Of his 23 offers, eight come from the conference that has won every BCS national championship game since 2007.
One of those schools, Auburn, won a national title in 2010. On Monday, the Tigers offered Watkins, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback. Auburn joined Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M among the SEC schools that have offered.
“They had a down year,” Watkins said of Auburn, “but they are due for a major comeback.”
Recruited by Auburn cornerbacks coach Melvin Smith, Watkins is entertaining additional offers from traditional powerhouses such as Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Stanford and others. While he said he’s not making a decision any time soon, he did express why an Auburn offer carried extra weight.
“They play in the SEC,” he said, “where the best competition is.”
Watkins, a player who many believe could be just as dominant on the next level as a wide receiver, has proven himself to be a reliable shutdown cornerback. He was a second-team all-state selection this past season for Bishop Dunne.
Watkins added that while a visit has not been set up, he would like to take a trip to Auburn if time permits.
