Georgia offers Watch List DE Newell

By Radi Nabulsi

ESPN Watch List defensive end Peyton Newell (Hiawatha, Kan./Hiawatha) estimates that he has picked up seven new offers over the last two weeks. His offer list stretches from UCLA to South Carolina and from Texas to Michigan State. Twenty-seven schools so far have extended verbal offers to the 6-foot-3, 270-pound junior, including the Georgia Bulldogs who offered on Wednesday.

“Yesterday I got offers from Georgia and Michigan State on the same day,” Newell said. “So it has been definitely crazy. I think I have gotten an offer from every conference. It is overwhelming and exciting. And I am very blessed to be in the situation that I am in with being able to have my choice on where to go. So I am really excited for next year.”

The Bulldogs’ coaching staff may be the latest offer but Newell has been on Georgia’s radar for a while.

“They have sent quite a few letters to the school and to my house over the last few years,” Newell said. “So I definitely knew they were interested. The added me on Facebook and messaged me and my dad has talked with Coach [Chris] Wilson a few times. Last night they said to give them a call, so we called them and they offered me.”

It was a short conversation but a longer one is in the works.

“We weren’t able to talk that long but I will be going down there on a visit as soon as I can,” Newell said. “I am not sure when yet but we are going to try and plan one. I am very interested in them and I am glad that they gave me an offer. I watched the game when they played Nebraska and I was really impressed. I know that the weather down there is really nice and that the facilities are state of the art. So I am definitely excited to get down there.”

His father, Frank Newell, used to live in Jonesboro, Ga., and is quite familiar with the Bulldogs. Frank is not surprised at the attention his son is receiving.

“Peyton probably first popped on the radar when he was (FBU) All-American as an eighth grade,” Frank Newell said. “That was when Ray Drew and those guys were seniors. So that was when it got started and it has snowballed from there and really taken off.”

The timing of all the offers coincides with Peyton’s plans as well.

“We made it clear he wants to make an early decision and try to get it behind him,” Frank Newell said. “Peyton is keeping it open for know but before long he will start to narrow his list down and then just concentrate on a handful. We took an unofficial to South Carolina two weeks ago. It’s SEC football so he is excited about the Georgia offer.”
