DB Kennar Johnson to take in Athens

The Georgia recruiting class for 2013 already has 27 commitments, so the remaining spots are at a premium.

The only way the Bulldogs can sign all their targets is to make use of the early enrollee spaces available in January. One official visitor to Athens, Ga., this weekend might take one of those spots as junior college defensive back Kennar Johnson (Miami, Fla./Mississippi Gulf Coast) is slated to graduate in December.

“I will be visiting on Friday,” Johnson said. “I am going to sit down with the coaches and see where we are at. I want to enjoy the game. It is going to be a rivalry game with Georgia Tech so I will get a chance to see that.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound defensive back wants to see where he would fit on the Bulldogs' roster.

“I played cornerback this last season at Gulf Coast,” Johnson said. “Georgia wants me to play safety. They are saying that if I wanted to I could try to play corner, too, but they want me to play safety.”

Johnson has offers from Ole Miss, Georgia, Mississippi State, South Florida, West Virginia, Iowa State, South Alabama, Middle Tennessee, Minnesota and Memphis. He will be making a decision soon.

“After this visit to Georgia it is pretty much down to the wire and it will be time to decide where I am going,” Johnson said. “My top schools right now are Georgia, Ole Miss, South Florida and Mississippi State.”

The Bulldogs are already set to get one player from Mississippi Gulf Coast as Johnson’s teammate, defensive lineman Chris Mayes of Griffin, Ga., is committed to Georgia and set to enroll in January. The big nose tackle is pushing Johnson to join him.

“He is in my ear about it all the time,” Johnson said. “Definitely. He is a huge guy. I will graduate in December as well.”

This Friday will not be Johnson’s first trip to the Classic City.

“I have been there in the summertime,” Johnson said. “I like the campus -- it was nice and big. The nightlife was nice. I am originally from Miami so it was a plus for me being in a city like that. I like the SEC atmosphere. It is an SEC school that is very football oriented. And to be able to be in and be a part of a program like that would be a big deal.”
