Around the Hedges in 80 Days: D. Bowman

June, 20, 2012
Seventy-three days remain until Georgia kicks off its season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 1. In the days counting down to the opener, DawgNation will profile, with our “Around the Hedges in 80 Days” series, a Bulldogs player we expect to make an impact. We will review each player’s career thus far and project his long-term potential as we progress through our alphabetical list, from center David Andrews to receiver Rantavious Wooten.

Fall forecast: Bowman is listed as a third-string cornerback behind Sanders Commings and Malcolm Mitchell on Georgia’s offseason depth chart, but he could fill a significant role -- particularly early in the season. With Commings facing a two-game suspension and fellow first-team corner Branden Smith likely to sit out at least a game after a March arrest, young cornerbacks including Bowman, Malcolm Mitchell and Damian Swann will have to fill the void. If Bowman proves himself reliable in preseason camp and in those early games, he could continue to play an active role even after the starting seniors return to the rotation.

Possible career impact: Bowman has barely begun to establish what his future at Georgia will be. He arrived on campus late last summer and spent the 2011 season working on the scout team as a defensive back and kick-returner. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham complimented Bowman for his progress during spring practice, and the redshirt freshman played extensively during G-Day, so he certainly seems poised to be part of the cornerback rotation.
