Around the Hedges in 80 Days: R. Wooten

8/30/2012

One day remains until Georgia kicks off its season opener against Buffalo on Saturday. In the days counting down to the opener, DawgNation will profile, with our “Around the Hedges in 80 Days” series, a Bulldogs player we expect to make an impact. We will review each player’s career thus far and project his long-term potential as we progress through our alphabetical list, from center David Andrews to receiver Rantavious Wooten.

1. Rantavious Wooten

Junior, Receiver

5-foot-10, 185 pounds

Fall forecast: After missing nearly all of last season following a concussion sustained in a four-car wreck on the week of the Ole Miss game, Wooten is healthy and back in the receiver rotation for this fall. The elusive wideout has the potential to bring a different dimension to Georgia’s passing game, although he has not produced much to this point. He’s listed as Tavarres King’s backup at flanker for Saturday’s Buffalo game, however, so a strong preseason camp has clearly put Wooten in position to contribute more this fall.

Career highlight: Wooten’s best game came in perhaps Georgia’s sloppiest loss of his freshman season: an error-filled 2009 defeat against Kentucky. Wooten caught passes of 21 and 43 yards, both of which went for touchdowns. He has caught only two touchdown passes since then.

Experience thus far: Wooten has started three times and appeared in 26 games, recording 19 catches for 277 yards and four touchdowns. He had two catches for 39 yards and a touchdown when he went down for the season last fall.

Possible career impact: Aside from the unexpected two-touchdown performance against Kentucky as a freshman, Wooten’s career has mostly been quiet thus far. He still has two years of eligibility to make a bigger impact, and he seems to have had more of a presence in the passing game this preseason. Wooten probably won’t become a superstar receiver in college, but his skill set could help him become a useful performer in his final two seasons of eligibility.
