UGA visit wows 2014 RB Sony Michel

7/31/2012

What was once a two-team race for 2014 running back Sony Michel (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) has opened up after the talented tailback visited the University of Georgia on Friday. Now it appears that Florida State and Miami have a new school with which to compete.

“It is probably not going to be that battle anymore because Georgia is in the mix now,” Michel said. “Georgia’s great. It is something amazing, something different. I am glad I actually took this visit because it is one of my choices now.”

Michel spent the night Friday in Athens, Ga., and left Saturday. He found it hard to name what he liked the most about his time in the Classic City.

“I liked everything,” Michel said. “There was no downside to this visit. From the facilities, the coaches, the people around, the classrooms, the dorm rooms -- everything was a plus. The dining hall was something special. I was hoping I could go back again today.”

Eventfully he settled on the presentation that Mark Richt and running backs coach Bryan McClendon made to the rising junior.

“The time with the coaches was great,” Michel said. “They are people I can relate to. Meeting Coach McClendon and all the coaches was something great. I talked to Coach Richt and he is a laid back coach. He will tell you things straight-up and that was a positive thing.”

Among the things that Richt spoke of was the tailback situation for the Bulldogs.

“They weren’t pushing me,” Michel said. “They showed me everything and basically laid out the opportunity for me. And it is there. It is a good opportunity and something I am looking into. Georgia is probably the last place I will visit this summer.”

Michel’s recruitment will only heat up as he takes more visits. He has double-digit offers from top programs like LSU, Alabama, Florida, Wisconsin and Notre Dame despite only having played one year of high school football. But what a year it was.

“I didn’t play my sophomore year but my freshman year I had 1730 yards,” Michel said. “I had an injury last year -- tore my ACL. I haven’t played a game since last August. Right now I am 100 percent. I am just waiting for camp. I can’t wait until it comes. That is one thing I am looking forward to. I just want to have a productive season this year. I want to lead my team to success and to all the team goals we want to accomplish.”

One of his offers was confirmed while in Athens.

“I got a Georgia offer in the spring,” Michel said. “Coach McClendon came down to see me and then Coach Richt re-offered me again when I was there.”

With the Bulldogs now being an option for the 5-foot-11, 194 pound running back, Michel was asked if anyone else was “in the mix” with Georgia, Florida State and Miami.

“Right now?” Michel said. “Not that I know of. I am still waiting until I take my unofficial visits.”

The Bulldogs have a commitment from 2014 running back Stanley Williams (Monroe, Ga./George Walton Academy) and 2014 standout tailback Bo Scarbrough (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Northridge) recently named Georgia his leader.
