ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia’s baseball team will learn its NCAA tournament fate on Monday.

Thanks to wins against some of the nation’s highest-ranked teams, the Bulldogs (31-26, 14-15 SEC) still have an outside shot at an at-large regional bid, although they severely damaged their chances by losing their last four games -- the final two games of the regular season against a horrendous Alabama team and both games at the SEC tournament.

“We’ve got quality wins,” Georgia coach David Perno said. “We’ve beaten everybody at least once that we played. So it’s a situation where it’s out of our hands. I know we could’ve done a better job on our end. [We were] in control of it and right now it’s out of our hands.”

The NCAA will release its 64-team field on Monday’s “Road to Omaha” selection show at noon on ESPNU. The Bulldogs will either earn an NCAA regional bid for the second straight season or miss it for the second time in three years.

Georgia owns a 5-12 record against teams ranked in the USA Today/ESPN Baseball Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs’ record against those individual teams: No. 2 Florida (1-2), No. 4 South Carolina (1-1), No. 5 LSU (1-2), No. 10 UCLA (0-3), No. 12 Kentucky (1-2) and No. 14 Arkansas (1-2).

The Bulldogs finished with the eighth-best record in SEC play this season. Last year seven SEC teams made the NCAA tournament field, while eight SEC teams made it in 2009 and 2010 and nine earned a bid in 2008.

If the Bulldogs miss out on a spot in the tournament, they will have only themselves to blame for going 3-6 down the stretch after putting themselves in prime position for a postseason berth with a sweep against Auburn in early May.

“I think we’re a good baseball team and I would love for them to get a shot,” Perno said. “But again, we’ve made it hard and definitely have put it in other people’s hands.”
