UGA baseball week in review

May, 6, 2012
Results: Georgia swept Auburn over the weekend to complete its first SEC sweep since last year. The Bulldogs won 5-2 Friday, 6-5 in 11 innings Saturday and 9-3 Sunday.

Georgia record: 28-20 (12-12 SEC)

Highlight of the week: Kyle Farmer drove in Curt Powell with the winning run, following Powell’s RBI on a fielder’s choice, as Georgia scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to rally past Auburn in Saturday’s win.

Top offensive performer: Farmer batted .467 (7-for-15) in the Auburn series with five RBIs and three runs. He hit his fourth home run of the season on Sunday and delivered his second game-ending RBI of the season in Saturday’s victory. His first came against Kennesaw State at the Gwinnett Braves’ Coolray Field earlier this year.

Top pitching performer: Alex Wood. Georgia’s star left-hander came up big in the series opener, allowing two runs and just four hits in eight innings. Wood struck out 10 and walked three in improving to 6-1 this season and dropping his ERA to 2.64.

Key statistic: 16. By beating Auburn in all three games, Georgia picks up its first SEC series sweep in its last 16 tries, dating back to April 1-3, 2011, when the Bulldogs took all three games from Mississippi State at Foley Field.

Up next: The Bulldogs visit Georgia Tech on Wednesday to complete the rivals’ three-game season series and then host No. 3 South Carolina for a three-game series at Foley Field starting Friday.
