The Georgia Bulldogs put out several new offers during their VID Day on Saturday, but Kelsey Griffin (Hoschton, Ga./Mill Creek) was not one of them. That’s because the 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive lineman received his offer from the Bulldogs last July, after racking up 96 tackles and six sacks during his sophomore season. His latest visit to Athens seems to have helped Georgia’s chances with the in-state target.
“It went great,” Griffin said. “I got to see more of the campus, talk to the coaches more and get a closer look at the team. I like how they explained their game plan on defense, and the way I fit in will play a big factor in my final decision.”
Griffin mentioned his time with the Bulldogs staff as his favorite part of Saturday’s visit, but he noted that several other activities also stood out.
“The best part of the visit was talking to Coach [Mark] Richt and all of the coaches sat down with me while Coach [Rodney] Garner showed me a couple plays and how they would use me,” Griffin said. “I think that was the most important part. On top of that I got to check out the cafeteria and the food is so fresh. That was my first time eating there and I had heard from others about it, and the rumors are true.
I also got to take in my first college basketball game. It was versus South Carolina, so it was pretty intense.”
During their time together, Richt made sure to remind Griffin of what was most important for a student-athlete.
“Coach Richt spoke to me about staying on track with grades, and how they mean everything,” Griffin said. “That is definitely true, so it was great to hear that from him. He also talked about how much they need me and how I would fit in, and also just about life outside of football.”
Two others trying to get Griffin to go to Georgia were a bit more deliberate in their approach.
“I talked to Tray Matthews and Shaq Wiggins and they were trying their hardest to convince me to commit, but I had to turn them down,” Griffin said. “I am open-minded right now and I am not going to try and change my mind. I enjoyed the visit but it is not time for me to make my decision yet, so I just told them maybe.”
