Postgame quotes from UGA-NMSU

11/5/2011

Here is some of what Georgia's players and coaches had to say after Saturday's homecoming win against New Mexico State:

Georgia running back Brandon Harton on fumbling the ball on his first carry:

“I wanted to score so bad on that first carry. We were so close to the goal line. We had just run a few passing plays before, so the defense was tired. I felt if I just hit it hard that I could break arm tackles and they’d be too tired to catch me before I got to the end zone.”

Harton on whether he was nervous before the game:

“I wouldn’t really say jitters. I was more anxious than anything just to get out and play, so coming out I knew that Coach wasn’t going to throw any surprises at me, so I felt confident I would know what to do. I just went out and executed my responsibility.”

Lifelong Georgia fan Kyle Karempelis on walking on at Georgia after attracting little attention from college recruiters, then rushing for 63 yards and a touchdown on Saturday:

“I have no regrets about not getting that many offers because I got to experience this and I think this is pretty dang cool.”

Karempelis on getting to play in his first college game:

“I knew coming in that I was going to have to work my butt off just to get a rep and they’ve definitely been good to me as a preferred walk-on. They gave me an opportunity that I never thought was going to happen this quickly.”

Karempelis on growing up going to Georgia games and the difference between Sanford Stadium and the stadiums he played in at Class A Wesleyan:

“I’ve been in the stadium since childhood because I was a fan. It’s definitely like home, but it’s a lot bigger scale than a 1-A stadium.”

Quarterback Aaron Murray on Harton:

“He’s had a great offseason, great spring, great camp. We had a lot of faith in him. We weren’t stressed out at all that we were missing our main guys. We knew he’d come in there and do a great job.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo on the play of the running backs:

“You did what you were supposed to do. You came out and executed well, handled adversity well. Guys stepped up and played well around those guys. And those guys, you’ve got to give them credit. They were well prepared by Coach McClendon and they did a good job of executing the game plan.”

Tight end Aron White on how Georgia spread around the offensive production:

“It’s always good to involve as many people as possible because the defense can’t hone in on any one person that’s your standout player. I think we’ve been balanced all year, but for some reason in this game we got to play a lot of different guys and a lot of guys stepped up and made plays.”

Receiver Chris Conley on Murray’s performance:

“Aaron had a great day. Aaron was very comfortable back in the pocket. They gave him great time and he could see everything and he made great throws and we just caught the ball for him.”

Quarterback Hutson Mason on the difficulty of the win:

“I think we expected them to play better than they did today. Just watching them on film, we thought they were a really good team. We thought they were better than Coastal Carolina. Them going to Minnesota and beating Minnesota, that kind of gets your attention. But that’s a hard defense to play against when you’re going against our D.”
