ATHENS, Ga. -- Although he played coy on the subject at Wednesday’s national signing day press conference, Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham finally confirmed that he has received attention from at least one NFL club.

UGA athletic director Greg McGarity revealed as much in a statement released to the press on Thursday morning.

“In accordance with his contractual obligation, Todd Grantham notified me Wednesday night of the New Orleans Saints’ interest in interviewing him for the defensive coordinator position,” McGarity said.

While multiple sources have said that former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has landed the Saints job, the New Orleans Times-Picayune also reported on Tuesday night that the club would interview Grantham on Thursday.

Grantham tried to avoid directly commenting on the subject at the Wednesday press conference, but confirmed that he would inform McGarity and head coach Mark Richt at the appropriate time if necessary.

“If I feel like I need to discuss something, I have a great relationship with Coach Richt and Greg and I would definitely do that from that standpoint,” said Grantham, whose name has also been attached to the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator search. “For me the most important thing is doing a great job at Georgia because I like my job here.

“At the same time, as you move forward, if opportunities came up, I don’t think it’s fair to comment on every particular one because then all I’d be doing is talking about the rumors and innuendos and those kind of things and then I couldn’t do my job.”

The 11-year NFL coaching veteran came to Georgia in 2010 and fielded a top-five total defense in 2011. The Bulldogs were 32nd in total defense and 18th against the score in 2012, but will lose 12 significant defensive contributors this fall.
