To gear up for 2013 national signing day, DawgNation's Radi Nabulsi is breaking down every commitment in the Bulldogs' 2013 recruiting class.
Vitals: Wide receiver Jonathon Rumph, Cayce, S.C./Holmes CC | 6-foot-5, 215 pounds
Committed: Nov. 11, 2012
ESPN.com grade: 83. Four-star prospect.
ESPN.com rankings: No. 7 in ESPN Junior College 100
Picked Georgia over: Alabama, LSU, Nebraska, South Carolina and others.
State of the position: The Bulldogs lost two of their top receivers in Tavarres King and Marlon Brown to graduation. The returning wideouts are quite talented though. Malcolm Mitchell led all receivers in catches during the regular season and could again next year as he won’t be splitting time playing on the defense. Michael Bennett is expected to return after an ACL injury and Chris Conley came on strong at the end of this past season. Rantavious Wooten will be the only senior, coming off his most productive season so far. Look for track star Justin Scott-Wesley to get more than three receptions next year and for Blake Tibbs to make his debut after a redshirt season.
Pros: “Rumph plays with a mean streak and really works to get off press coverage. He uses his frame to shield defenders from the ball, has the strong hands to make the touch catch in traffic when focused and is a red zone problem for DBs. He shows a second gear when tracking the ball downfield and is a mismatch on the jump ball, even against taller corners. He has the body control to adjust to the ball and can make the tough over-the-shoulder catch. Rumph catches the ball in-stride and is a threat to turn the short gain into the big play.” -- ESPN scouting report
Cons: “Rumph isn't always flashy, but he has the measurables and playmaking skills to be an immediate contributor and a possible impact player.” -- ESPN scouting report
Similar to/potential role: Marlon Brown. With Brown graduating, Georgia doesn’t have a receiver over 6-3 but in Rumph the Bulldogs will have the big target that Brwon provided.
Expected impact: 2013. You may have noticed that the “Cons” section of this snapshot is not exactly a negative as being flashy doesn’t score points. But Rumph is a highly coveted playmaker and if even half of what his coaches say about him is true, then he should step right in and be an immediate threat for Georgia.
