Editor’s note: Over the next several weeks, we’ll take a look at each position on Georgia’s depth chart and project how it might look in the future. Today we examine Georgia’s quarterbacks:
Who’s ready to move up for more playing time?: With Murray’s announcement on Sunday that he plans to return for his senior season, it’s hard to say how much playing time will be available. Mason just completed a redshirt season that would allow him to compete to be the starter in 2014. He would probably be the first option to play over several younger contenders.
High-profile commits: Under Armour All-American Brice Ramsey (Kingsland, Ga./Camden County) is already on campus as an early enrollee and will participate in spring practices.
Additional targets on the board: The Bulldogs appear to be set at quarterback for the time being.
2013 game plan: There is a considerable logjam at the position now that Ramsey’s addition gives Georgia five quarterbacks on scholarship, plus walk-on Parker Welch. Mason redshirted in 2012 with the idea that Murray might leave for the NFL after this season, giving him two years to potentially be the Bulldogs’ starter. But now Mason, Christian LeMay, Faton Bauta and Ramsey are all on campus as Murray’s backups. It will be interesting to see whether any of the reserves opt to transfer in search of greater opportunity elsewhere.
