HINESVILLE, Ga. -- ESPN Watch List linebacker Raekwon McMillan (Hinesville, Ga./Liberty County) has narrowed his long offer list down to a top five, with Ohio State in the lead. Clemson, Georgia, USC and Alabama are also in his top group. But don’t expect an announcement anytime soon.
“My decision will be at the 2014 Under Armour All-America Game,” McMillan said.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound junior acknowledged the pressure to stay in the Peach State.
“As a Georgia boy, you want to stay at home, but you know there may be better opportunities, better blessings out there for you,” McMillan said. “Every offer I have right now is a blessing -- even a Division II offer from Alabama State is a blessing. But if you feel there are more opportunities for you out there and you feel better at a different college, then you need to do what is right for you and not just stay at home to make your home state proud. Do what is right for you.”
The 16-year-old linebacker already has the blessing of his mother to attend school wherever he likes.
“I actually asked my mom yesterday how she would feel about me going away,” McMillan said. “She said she just wants the decision to be made for me and that when I get there that I feel at home. She wants what is best for me, whether it is staying home or going far away.”
McMillan has been busy hitting up some of the schools closest to him before he takes the longer trips.
“I have been to South Carolina for the Georgia game, Georgia for the Tennessee game and to Clemson -Virginia Tech game,” McMillan said. “The South Carolina crowd was crazy. They really put a beating on Georgia but Georgia fought hard. Clemson really came up on my list after the visit because they treated me well.”
The Tigers apparently gave McMillan the rockstar treatment and he laughed as he remembered the trip.
“The coaching staff took good care of me,” McMillan said. “I really didn’t need to walk on campus. Everywhere I went the shuttled a little buggy towards me to take me somewhere. I didn’t have to walk anywhere. It was real nice.”
His top five is not set in stone, and the Gators will get a chance to host McMillan on Saturday.
“I will go to the Florida-Missouri game next weekend and then try to get to the Clemson-NC State game,” McMillan said. “I will end the season at the Ohio State-Michigan game.”
After the season is over, McMillan will play in the Rising Seniors Bowl, an annual program that highlights the best talent in Georgia.
“It will be the best guys in the east against the best guys in the west,” McMillan said. “Our East team is loaded; the West guys can’t compete with us. I really think we are going to blow them out this time.”
