ATHENS, Ga. -- The Georgia Bulldogs come in at No. 11 in the first release of the Bowl Championship Series standings for the 2012 season. After starting the season with five straight wins that saw the Bulldogs ranked as high as No. 5, Georgia’s lone loss to No. 9 South Carolina dropped the Bulldogs to No. 13 in the AP poll and No. 12 in the coaches poll.
The Bulldogs have only one real chance within their own control to make up some ground in the standings during the regular season when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for the annual showdown with the Gators. Florida is ranked at No. 2 in the initial BCS standings.
The Gamecocks, the only ranked team that Georgia has faced and one that dominated the Bulldogs, are ranked No. 7 in the BCS standings. Georgia’s previous six opponents have a combined win-loss record of 15-22, with the Gamecocks accounting for a third of those wins. Buffalo, Missouri, Florida Atlantic and Vanderbilt all have losing records, while Tennessee is even at 3-3.
The Bulldogs' remaining opponents have amassed a combined win-loss record of 19-19, with the No. 3 Florida Gators and the FCS-level Georgia Southern Eagles accounting for 11 of those wins. Georgia faces two teams in Kentucky and Auburn that so far only have one win apiece.
