Receiver Jonathan Rumph (Cayce, S.C./Holmes Community College) is getting close to a decision, and this past weekend the 6-foot-5, 215-pound juco wideout was in Athens, Ga., for his final official visit before he announces his commitment.

“It was a good trip and I am glad I got a chance to see the school and get a better look at Georgia,” Rumph said. “What stood out was the bond that the coaches have with each other, the players, the fan base and the atmosphere, the great community in Athens.”

Georgia's coaching staff was the first thing that stood out to Rumph, with his potential position coach making a solid impression.

DECATUR, Ga. -- Defensive end Bryson Allen-Williams (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove) got his first start at middle linebacker Friday night, and the ESPN Watch List member loved it. He finished with double-digit tackles, multiple quarterback hurries, an interception and a forced fumble that teammate Daletavius McGhee returned 74 yards for a touchdown.

“That was my first game playing linebacker and I think I did OK,” Allen-Williams said.

UGA finds familiar faces at Auburn

ATHENS, Ga. -- Most college football coaches adopt a business-first mentality out of necessity.

Many of them -- particularly well-traveled coaches -- cross paths with former co-workers several times per season, but they understand their loyalties must be to their jobs and not to friends with other programs or even their alma maters.

Despite that fact of life within the coaching ranks, Georgia coach Mark Richt and several of the coaches involved in Saturday’s meeting between the fifth-ranked Bulldogs (8-1, 6-1 SEC) and rival Auburn (2-7, 0-6) will face highly unusual circumstances in that regard.

All three men who have served as defensive coordinator for Richt at Georgia will be coaching Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium -- Todd Grantham, who has held the position at Georgia since 2010, and Auburn assistants Brian VanGorder (2001-04) and Willie Martinez (2005-09).

“I love both of them, I love their families, but I think we all know that we’ve got to prepare our teams to play ball and that’s what will be going on from kickoff till the end,” Richt said when asked about VanGorder and Martinez, who were both members of his original staff at UGA.

VanGorder helped Richt put Georgia’s program on the map with a fearsome brand of defense that regularly had the Bulldogs among the national leaders in most defensive statistical categories. He won the 2003 Frank Broyles Award, which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach, before holding a variety of positions in the interim -- most recently defensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons before accepting the same job at Auburn in the offseason.

Meanwhile, Martinez was at Georgia recently enough to have coached with most members of Richt’s staff. Several veteran Bulldogs played under Martinez, as well, which is a more irregular occurrence for players and their former coaches.

“He taught me a lot of things when he was here, so I’m kind of happy to see him because I haven’t seen him in a long time,” said senior safety Bacarri Rambo, who was a freshman in 2009 when Martinez was in his final season as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach.

That doesn’t mean the reunion will be entirely comfortable, however.

ATHENS, Ga. -- If it feels like we’ve been here before in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, it’s because we have.

Saturday’s game on the Plains will be the 21st time that the Georgia-Auburn game decided the conference fate of at least one of the teams, whether it was an overall SEC or divisional title. Georgia is 11-8-1 in such situations in series history.

This time, No. 5 Georgia (8-1, 6-1 SEC) has its SEC East and BCS bowl hopes on the line, while Auburn (2-7, 0-6) is attempting to create a bright spot in an otherwise disastrous season.

Bama, UGA show interest in RB Ford

NEW HOPE, Ala. -- When Johnathan Ford (New Hope, Ala./New Hope) visited Vanderbilt for its spring game, he saw a program on the rise. Head coach James Franklin was changing the culture, and Ford wanted to be a part of it. He committed to the Commodores while on the trip.

“I like Coach Franklin and the new atmosphere he’s bringing, the whole energy he’s bringing there now,” Ford said. “I like that whole aspect of it. It’s pretty big time up there, the way he’s changing the program. He’s trying to do stuff that’s never been done before up there.”

With the commitment came excitement, but that same excitement has turned into stress with recent interest from Alabama and Georgia, the cream of the crop in the SEC.

Week 11 in the SEC

November, 5, 2012
11/05/12

PM ET
Here's a quick primer for Week 11 in the SEC:

Arkansas (4-5, 2-3 SEC) at No. 8 South Carolina (7-2, 5-2SEC), Noon ET, CBS: The Gamecocks are rested from the bye and the hope is the emotions from Marcus Lattimore's season-ending injury won't hurt this team's mindset. Arkansas escaped Tulsa over the weekend and will have to play its most complete game to top South Carolina. Both have a lot to play for, as a BCS bowl is still in the cards for the Gamecocks, while Arkansas needs two more wins to grab a bowl berth.

Missouri (4-5, 1-5 SEC) at Tennessee (4-5, 0-5 SEC), 12:21 p.m. ET, SECNetwork: Both of these teams are in desperate need of a win. Missouri's offense has sputtered along in SEC play, while Tennessee's defense has been sliced and diced by its opponents all season. Something has to give on Saturday. With Texas A&M still on the schedule, the Tigers might have to get this win if they are going to go bowling, while another Vols win will help take a little heat off of coach Derek Dooley.

Louisiana-Lafayette (5-3) at No. 6 Florida (8-1, 7-1 SEC), 12:21 p.m. ET, SEC Network: The Gators begin two weeks of cupcake play with the Ragin' Cajuns. The next two weeks should be devoted to figuring things out in the passing game for the Gators. Quarterback Jeff Driskel is getting little help outside of tight end Jordan Reed. The good news for Florida is that Louisiana-Lafayette is 118th nationally in pass defense, so if the Gators are going to get some confidence back in its passing game, Saturday should be a good start.

No. 15 Texas A&M (7-2, 4-2 SEC)at No. 1 Alabama (9-0, 6-0 SEC), 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS: With the Crimson Tide coming off of a very physical and a very emotional win over LSU, the Aggies don't give Alabama the best matchup this weekend. LSU provided a bit of a blueprint on how to beat the Tide, and Texas A&M's high-flying offense is capable of generating some yards and points on this Tide defense. Containing Johnny Manziel will be Alabama's top objective, while the Aggies will be looking to stop the Tide's bullish running game.

No. 5 Georgia (8-1, 6-1 SEC) at Auburn (2-7, 0-6 SEC), 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2: A win for Georgia and the Bulldogs are heading to the SEC championship game for the second straight year. After being counted out (again), Georgia is in complete control of the East and is a win away from silencing a lot of those critics in Athens. Auburn finally got its second win of the year last weekend and has a new quarterback in Jonathan Wallace. The offense made strides against New Mexico State and this is a game that the Bulldogs can't overlook. It's a rivalry game and it's a night game in one of college football's best venues.

Vanderbilt (5-4, 3-3 SEC) at Ole Miss (5-4, 2-3 SEC), 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU: When it comes to the postseason, this is a must-win for both teams. Vandy is cruising along on a three-game winning streak, while the Rebels are coming off of a blowout loss to Georgia. Ole Miss has dropped two straight to the Commodores and with LSU and Mississippi State remaining, this might be Ole Miss' best chance to get that sixth win. Things are really clicking for the Commodores, and they'll enter Saturday's game with a lot more momentum than the Rebels.

No. 21 Mississippi State (7-2, 3-2 SEC) at No. 7 LSU(7-2, 3-2 SEC), 7 p.m. ET, ESPN: The Tigers will likely feel quite the hangover from that tough loss to Alabama, but the Bulldogs are coming off of an embarrassing loss to Texas A&M. This will be another night game in Death Valley and the Tigers know they are still in line to reach the Allstate Sugar Bowl if they win out. LSU played its best offensive game of the season, while the Bulldogs have taken plenty of steps back on both sides of the ball in the past two weeks.

Brendan Langley visits Georgia, again

ATHENS, Ga. -- The Georgia football team has played five home games, and South Carolina defensive back commit Brendan Langley (Marietta, Ga./Kell) has visited for three of them. He was in town again Saturday as the Bulldogs hosted the Ole Miss Rebels.

“It went well as usual,” Langley said. “I had a good time at the game. I met with Coach [Mark] Richt and all of them. He said, ‘Glad to have you, glad to see you back again. Keep in mind we still want you, need you and you haven’t signed anything yet. Time is ticking but there is still time to change your mind.’ I acknowledged that, and I understand that.”

The ESPN 300 cornerback plans to enroll early, so he has less time than he normally would if he waited until signing day to make his final decision. In the meantime, Langley says he is solid to the Gamecocks.

Weekend Rewind: Georgia

November, 5, 2012

AM ET
ATHENS, Ga. -- The Georgia Bulldogs returned to Sanford Stadium on Saturday after playing on the road for over a month. Having beaten Florida the week prior, the team was welcomed like conquering heroes during the pregame Dawg Walk and then again when the team took the field. The Bulldogs went on to beat Ole Miss on national television and the entire spectacle was witnessed by a number of Georgia’s top recruiting targets.

Robert Nkemdiche (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) was on hand with his mother to see his brother Denzel Nkemdiche, who plays middle linebacker for Ole Miss. The No. 1 prospect in the nation also spent time checking out Georgia. He was greeted by a number of recruiters, from the athletic director to the men’s basketball coach.

The Bulldogs hosted juco wide receiver Jonathan Rumph (Cayce, S.C./Holmes Community College) on an official visit. The 6-foot-4, 194-pound star wideout also was given the rock-star treatment, as he is atop Georgia’s wish list at the receiver position. The Bulldogs don’t have a receiver his size on the roster and would love to add an experienced wideout such as Rumph to their young receiving corps.

The jockeying for the second BCS bowl spot in the SEC will really get interesting these last three or four weeks. Granted, that's assuming Alabama wins out and goes to the Discover BCS National Championship Game, and it's never safe to assume anything in this league.

The Ole Miss-Vanderbilt game this Saturday will have huge bowl implications. The winner becomes bowl eligible. The Missouri-Tennessee game is also big for both teams on the bowl front. The Tigers almost have to win if they're going to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Florida, Georgia, LSU and South Carolina all remain in the running for an at-large BCS bowl berth. The Bulldogs can clinch the Eastern Division championship with a win at Auburn this weekend.

Here's our latest forecast for what the SEC postseason lineup will look like:

  • Allstate Sugar Bowl, Jan. 2: LSU
  • Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1: Florida
  • AT&T Cotton Bowl, Jan. 4: Texas A&M

Mark Richt stuns 2014 DB Cortez McDowell

November, 4, 2012

PM ET
As Cortez McDowell (Locust Grove, Ga./Locust Grove) was escorted into the defensive coaches’ meeting room, he thought he was just on the next part of a regular recruiting tour. The 2014 prospect plunked down in a chair and began perusing a playbook on the table, marveling at the different packages the Bulldogs used. While he had his nose buried in formations, someone called his name out.

He was surprised not only to see that no other prospects were left in the room but that University of Georgia coach Mark Richt was standing right in front of him.

McDowell stood up to shake Richt’s hand. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior admitted that what happened next caught him completely off guard.

The news that Georgia had lost another top receiver to an ACL injury caused a collective groan in Athens, Ga., on Sunday night. Mark Richt announced that Marlon Brown’s career for the Bulldogs came to an end when X-rays revealed that the senior would need surgery to repair his knee.

Brown was finally having the type of season that had been expected of him ever since the Bulldogs beat out the Tennessee Volunteers for the 6-foot-5 receiver in a contentious recruiting battle in 2009. Leading the team this year with 27 catches, Brown was second in receiving yards with 469 and had four touchdowns.

Brown's injury came a month after Georgia lost its then-leading receiver, Michael Bennett, to an ACL injury also. Tall and aggressive, Bennett was also the Bulldogs’ best downfield blocker.

With these two weapons out, where will Aaron Murray turn?

At 6-3, Chris Conley is UGA's lone receiver on scholarship who is taller than 6-1. Conley is willing to do the grunt work at which Bennett excelled -- and his grasp of the game belies his sophomore status. Conley can easily step into Brown’s role and be the big target that Murray needs over the middle. So far this season, Conley has seven catches for 84 yards and one touchdown.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has made greater use of the tight ends in recent games. However, right guard Chris Burnette also was injured against Ole Miss -- and Murray was sacked five times by the Rebels. If Burnette, who Richt said is day-to-day, cannot play against Auburn on Saturday, then Arthur Lynch and Jay Rome might be counted on for pass protection rather than running routes.

Another option for Murray could be redshirt freshman Justin Scott-Wesley. Although not a tall receiver like Brown, the 5-11 speedster is a track star who runs on the Bulldogs’ track team during the offseason. Brown is not known for his speed and Scott-Wesley can stretch the field in ways that Brown could not. On his only catch this season, Scott-Wesley streaked up the sideline for 43 yards before he was brought down. Georgia could also turn more to former walk-on Rhett McGowan. The 6-foot junior has received increased playing time and often returns punts. McGowan has five catches for 62 yards.
