Georgia Bulldogs

SEC
J.P. Vonashek (Kingsland, Ga./Camden Co.) came into Athens with two offers and left with three, as head coach Mark Richt extended the offensive lineman an opportunity Monday afternoon to play for the Bulldogs.

“Coach Richt had us up in his office and he sat down with me and my older brother and my brother-in-law,” Vonashek said. “He asked me, ‘Did Coach [Tony] Ball ask you if you want to be a Bulldog?’ I said no. Then he said, ‘Well, I am offering you a scholarship to come play at the University of Georgia.’ ”

For Vonashek, whose teammate J.J. Green committed to the Bulldogs just hours before, the offer was well received.

ESPN's Todd McShay analyzes the top 100 players in the NFL draft, breaking them down on his board into seven tiers, from the top five, who are considered elite prospects, to those who are solid third-rounders. This is the kind of tool many teams use on draft weekend when considering trades and whether a player is a value pick or a reach. Read more here.
Sure everyone's waiting on the two top players to decide, but top players including Anthony Bennett, Amile Jefferson and Georgia's Tony Parker can boost a program as well.

The Georgia Bulldogs had an outstanding day of recruiting Friday, netting commitments from wide receiver Kyrin Priester (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood), linebacker Ryne Rankin (East River, Fla./East River) and offensive lineman Aulden Bynum (Valdosta, Ga./Valwood). But the excitement for Georgia's coaches did not end there, because one of their top targets was on campus, spending the weekend in Athens.

Montravius Adams (Vienna, Ga./Dooly Co.) did not leave UGA until 5:30 p.m. Sunday, and while he has yet to name a top school, his stance on the Bulldogs continues to improve from December, when the 6-foot-3, 285-pound Under Armour All-American stated his intentions to leave the Peach State.

“Georgia is really high and I like them a lot more than I did at the beginning, before I really got to know the coaches and players,” Adams said. “That is really what stood out for me during my trip, getting to know the coaches and players and seeing how good of people they are.”

When ESPN 150 Watch List defensive back Brendan Langley (Marietta, Ga./Kell) returned home from his visit to the University of Alabama, he announced his commitment, but it wasn’t a commitment to the Crimson Tide.

On Twitter, Langley announced that he had committed to Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., a school he received mail from that week. He was only kidding.

As for his visit on the weekend to Tuscaloosa, the Georgia native got a chance to watch the scrimmage Friday and practice Saturday, and he seemed to enjoy himself on campus.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Cornelius Washington lowered his head and sighed when asked Thursday how he is handling the physical demands of his new responsibilities at defensive end.

“It’s kind of on and off. I have days where I do pretty well at it and then I have days where I don’t,” Washington said. “Just trying to be completely honest with you, everything’s not going to come easy to me despite what people may think. I work hard. I have to work hard just like everybody else. I just go out and do the best I can.”

But don’t let Washington’s modesty fool you. His Georgia teammates and coaches recognize that the rising senior has more to learn in juggling his jobs as a hybrid defensive end and outside linebacker, but they’re excited about his potential in that role.

Richt talks early commitments

ATHENS, Ga. -- After picking up three verbal commitments on Friday, Georgia already has 12 players publicly lined up for its 2013 signing class.

As of Saturday afternoon, that total was the fourth most in the country, ranking behind only Michigan (16), Texas A&M (13) and Texas (13).

It’s also a significantly larger group of public commitments than Mark Richt’s staff has ever assembled so early, as the program has never had double-digit commitments prior to the G-Day game under Richt.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia’s quarterbacks enjoyed greater success in Saturday’s scrimmage than perhaps at any point thus far in spring practice, but Coach Mark Richt said Aaron Murray and company’s passing statistics might have been a bit deceptive.

Since the quarterbacks are off limits for defensive players to tackle, it's often at the coaches' discretion to determine whether they have been sacked -- and the coaches prefer to let plays continue rather than blow them dead.

“I thought we threw it and caught it a lot better. It started out not very good at all, but as the scrimmage went on, more plays were made,” Richt said. “The other thing too, of course, you’re trying to make a judgment on whether a play would have been a sack or not and you try to err on the side of letting the ball get thrown, so there’s probably a few of those big plays that might have been sacks in a real game or a quarterback knockdown or a hurry.”

Edward Aschoff talks to Georgia's Malcolm Mitchell about switching to cornerback this spring and grasping Georgia's defense
Georgia picked up its fourth commitment of the week and its third of the day Friday when offensive lineman Aulden Bynum (Valdosta, Ga./Valwood) told coach Mark Richt that he wanted to be a Bulldog.

“It took him completely by surprise when I committed this afternoon,” Bynum told DawgNation. “We were in Richt’s office and I said that since we were all here I might as well tell you I am committing. Coach [Will] Friend was really happy, really excited.”

And by “all here” Bynum was referring to his family and the Georgia coaches.

Notes, thoughts on visit to Athens

April, 6, 2012

ATHENS, Ga. -- It's never too late to put up some quick notes and thoughts after a visit to a college campus. While you should expect more from my day in Athens with the Georgia Bulldogs in the next few days, here are some notes and thoughts from my visit that really stood out to me:
  • Georgia players and coaches have every reason to be jumping ship and freaking out about with the recent suspensions of defenders Bacarri Rambo, Sanders Commings, Branden Smith and Alec Ogletree. Three of those players call the secondary their home, while one, Ogletree, looks like he's ready to be a real star at linebacker in this league. But the first thing you notice when patrolling Georgia's facilities is that everyone is calm and collected about the matter. Sure, players and coaches are pretty frustrated with the situation, but they have moved on. They are working together to find the pieces to replace those guys come the start of the season. Inside linebacker Christian Robinson said that Ogletree's spot is still wide open because the Bulldogs have so many options, and it doesn't sound like the coaches will really name a starter anytime soon. Don't forget that Mike Gilliard, who really came on last year as the season progressed, and Amarlo Herrera will get reps with Robinson at middle linebacker. Robinson also said rising sophomore Ramik Wilson is getting good reps at middle linebacker.
