According to an announcement Thursday by Mark Richt, Georgia redshirt sophomore inside linebacker Brandon Burrows has decided to transfer in a quest to find more playing time.

“I came out of high school playing the defensive end position in a 4-3 defense which is what I truly love,” Burrows said. “The coaching change here led to a 3-4 defense. I have worked with that transition but decided that I want to get back to playing defensive end. I think another program may give me the best opportunity to succeed at that. I’m eternally gratefully for the opportunity Coach Richt has given me at UGA and for the fact that he gave me an unconditional release. I know I’ll be hard-pressed to find a group of coaches and players that will develop into the leaders and friends that I have known here in Athens.”

Burrows, a four-star recruit from 2010 who has a history of injuries dating back to his senior season at Walton High School, missed the 2011 season with a shoulder injury. He redshirted as a freshman, so he never played a down for the Bulldogs.

“Brandon is an outstanding person, student-athlete and has a wonderful family,” Richt said. “We’ve enjoyed having him as part of our program and will provide whatever assistance we can in his transition. I am completely understanding of his decision and wish him nothing but the best.”

Burrows departure leaves the Bulldogs with 74 players on scholarship, which includes five former walk-ons who were granted scholarships last year.
Last month, Quincy Mauger (Marietta, Ga./Kell) made the trip to Athens to compete at the Mark Richt Camp at the University of Georgia. The 6-foot, 199-pound safety arrived with offers from Iowa State, Navy, Ohio and UCF, and after one of the most impressive performances of the day, Mauger added another from the Bulldogs. His recruitment almost ended there, although Mauger is happy it did not.

“It was really hard not to commit when Georgia offered because of how exciting it was,” Mauger said. “But I have had some time to think about it and I feel pretty good about not basing my decision off of just that.”

In less than two weeks, Mauger plans to return to Athens to take a closer look at the academics, including the options in engineering, his intended major at the moment. He believes that he could be getting closer to ending his recruitment.

Fifty-eight days remain until Georgia kicks off its season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 1. In the days counting down to the opener, DawgNation will profile, with our “Around the Hedges in 80 Days” series, a Bulldogs player we expect to make an impact. We will review each player’s career thus far and project his long-term potential as we progress through our alphabetical list, from center David Andrews to receiver Rantavious Wooten.

58. Reuben Faloughi
Junior, Defensive end
6-foot-5, 255 pounds

Fall forecast: Faloughi recorded two tackles in Georgia’s season-opening loss to Boise State last season, but he accounted for just one tackle in the next seven games before sitting out the Bulldogs’ final six outings. He could figure into defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s plans as a reserve this fall, but he completed spring practice behind Jarvis Jones and T.J. Stripling on the depth chart at outside linebacker.

Today being the Fourth of July, we expect to see fireworks and parades. Georgia football has had its share of fireworks through the years, if we talk about individual performances and astonishing victories. With that in mind we asked the staff and DawgNation's readers:

“What is the biggest fireworks display, figuratively speaking, you have seen at a Georgia football game?"

Fifty-nine days remain until Georgia kicks off its season opener against Buffalo on Sept.

59. Ray Drew
Sophomore, Defensive end
6-foot-5, 263 pounds

Fall forecast: Georgia’s coaches decided in the offseason to take advantage of Drew’s growth by cross-training him at defensive end during spring practice. He played outside linebacker most of the time as a freshman and made slow but steady progress at DE in the spring. He will enter the season as the backup to Cornelius Washington -- who also made the switch in the spring from outside linebacker -- at end, but both players should bolster the Bulldogs’ pass rush off the edge this fall.

Georgia fans will be tuning in to The Opening, the July 5-8 premier camp in Oregon, to catch several of the Bulldogs' commitments in action. The coaching staff in Athens has to be pleased to see seven Georgia commitments take the field, the second-largest number of commits for any school at the event.

Georgia will be well represented on offense, with four future Dawgs in Oregon.

Quarterback Brice Ramsey (Kingsland, Ga./Camden County) and wide receiver Tramel Terry (Goose Creek, S.C./Goose Creek) are close friends and have been working on their timing together during visits this summer. Wide receiver Reggie Davis (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln) will meet up with his future quarterback as well. Protecting Ramsey in the future will be a true grappler, offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow (Marietta, Ga./Walton).

DawgNation on the radio

DawgNation’s Radi Nabulsi was on ESPN’s Athens affiliate 960 The Ref on Tuesday morning talking about the Isaiah Crowell fallout and what it means to the Georgia program. Plus he answered some other questions during the show, such as:
  • Why has Georgia struck out on its last three premier running backs?
  • Is this situation addition by subtraction?
  • What is the latest in Georgia recruiting?
  • Who is Georgia looking at to replace Crowell?
Listen to the radio show here.
Four-star Safety Tray Matthews (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) and five-star linebacker Reuben Foster (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) have been best friends since middle school. But it was not until after Foster committed to Alabama and Matthews committed to Georgia last summer that the two ESPN 150 prospects began seriously discussing the possibility of playing together at the next level. The two have gone back and forth on the Tide and Bulldogs in the last year. Many wondered whether Matthews and Foster would actually go through with their December pledge to attend the same college. Following Foster’s latest visit to Athens, Matthews said an agreement has been made.

“We are having fun, but we talked last night and we really know where we want to go,” Matthews said. “We both decided on a school and we are the only two that know. A couple of people are not going to like the decision, but we have to do what is best for us. “

Matthews says they will make their announcement together before the beginning of the season, and he feels two others could be joining them.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Four-star linebacker Trey Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga./Central Gwinnett) is the No. 2 inside linebacker in the country, and with Reuben Foster’s recent move to Auburn High School in Alabama, Johnson is now the top inside linebacker in the Peach State. Since the Georgia Bulldogs didn’t sign a player at that position in the 2012 recruiting class, it seems a head-scratcher that Johnson, who lives 40 miles away from Athens, doesn’t have an offer from the Bulldogs.

“I don’t hear from them too often,” Johnson said. “I heard from them in the spring but since then I haven’t heard from them too much. They were recruiting me before, back when I was hearing from everybody and I was going on visits and all that. Then I kind of committed to Auburn and it kind of died down.”

60. James DeLoach
Freshman, Outside linebacker
6-foot-3, 260 pounds

Fall forecast: Even with Cornelius Washington and Ray Drew shifting part-time to defensive end, Georgia still has depth at outside linebacker with All-American Jarvis Jones back along with fellow regular Chase Vasser and reserves T.J. Stripling, Ramik Wilson, Reuben Faloughi and Dexter Morant.

It might not have come as much of a surprise, but Yulee, Fla., athlete Derrick Henry announced the University of Alabama as his leader on Monday via Twitter. The ESPN 150 star was relieved to finally get it out there.

“I just wanted to get it out of the way,” Henry said. “A lot of people have been thinking it, and a lot of people have been asking me about it, so I just wanted to get it out of the way and let everybody know. Now people can stop wondering and asking me.”

Last month, Henry decommitted from the University of Georgia after a visit to Tuscaloosa -- and it was that trip that has put the Crimson Tide on top.

The going away party Leonard Floyd’s family threw for him may have been a bit premature. The outside linebacker from Dodge County (Ga.) told DawgNation on Saturday that he would be reporting Thursday to Athens to join the rest of the 2012 signing class after passing a summer school class. That departure appears to be delayed.

“The Clearinghouse red-flagged some of the classes I took in school,” Leonard said Monday. “Now I have to wait on my high school to call up the NCAA and talk to them about the classes I took.”

Floyd did not enroll in summer classes at Georgia because he had to take a class at Dodge County. He passed the world geography course with a 91. When asked how long it might be before the school responds, Floyd said, “I hope as soon as possible.”

ATHENS, Ga. -- Running back Bo Scarbrough (Tuscaloosa, Ala./North Ridge) hitched a ride to the University of Georgia with the unlikeliest of travel companions on Friday. The class of 2014 standout made the trip from Tuscaloosa to Athens with ESPN 150 Alabama commit Reuben Foster (Auburn, Ala./Auburn). Foster, who normally destroys running backs, went out of his way to help Scarbrough visit Georgia.

“He had never been to Athens before so I said, ‘Let’s go.’ ” Foster said. “He had a great time. He is going to be a beast.”
