Georgia Bulldogs: UCLA Bruins

AUBURN, Ala. -- Four-star linebacker Rashaan Evans (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) had all but narrowed his list to four schools -- Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and UCLA -- but that was before Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart called and invited him to camp last week.

The 6-foot-3, 211-pound Evans made the trip to Tuscaloosa last Monday to take part in the camp and show the coaches what he could do. It was first time on campus since visiting Alabama for a junior day in January.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Myles Autry is still on the sidelines. A vicious injury to his knee last fall, with tears to his ACL, MCL and meniscus, has kept the Norcross (Ga.) High School athlete from participating in basketball, track, spring practice and now the summer camp series. And it is killing him.

Christian Miller (Spring Valley, S.C./Spring Valley) does not feel like he rushed into his decision when he committed to Florida in February. He does, however, admit it might have been wise to see a few more places. While Miller felt comfortable being part of the Gators’ 2014 class, he did not want any regrets about the decision.

The decision to decommit came after being upfront with Florida coaches about his desires.

That is not to say Miller, the No. 76 prospect in the country, wants the Gators to stop recruiting him. His father spoke to Florida coach Will Muschamp who informed him that Christian is still one of their top guys, they still want him to be a Gator and they do not think anything has changed.

NORCROSS, Ga. -- ESPN 150 defensive end Lorenzo Carter seems to never stop grinning, even on the football field. His 100-megawatt smile calls to mind another affable defensive end, Michael Strahan, complete with the trademark gap. Even a shoving match with a teammate resulted in Carter falling down laughing about it later.

During the Norcross spring game on Friday, Carter and offensive tackle Horatio Walker tangled as they went at each other in the trenches. Walker held Carter’s jersey and was rewarded with a shot to the helmet.

“Well it was a run, and I don’t think Horatio respects me on the run yet, but it is all good,” Carter said between guffaws. “He tried to bully me around, but I was not having that so I had to hit him back. I was having fun out there.”

BUFORD, Ga. -- ESPN Watch List defensive end Lorenzo Carter (Norcross, Ga./Norcross) credits his blindingly pink socks and highlighter yellow shoelaces with helping him win the defensive lineman MVP award at the Atlanta NFTC on Saturday.

The award came with a brilliant gold dog tag that complemented his outfit. But what really caught Carter’s eye, and fashion sense, was the big gold box that he was handed that contained his invitation to The Opening.

BUFORD, Ga. -- Before Saturday, Rashaan Evans (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) had flown a bit under the radar. The ESPN Watch List linebacker has close to 30 scholarship offers, but his name doesn’t come up in the national conversation about the other elite linebackers.

That might change after Saturday's Atlanta NFTC. Evans turned heads with his performance, and even he was surprised with how well he did.

ATHENS, GA. -- ESPN Watch List tight end Milan Richard (Savannah, Ga./Calvary Baptist) spent the weekend visiting the University of Georgia with his parents, both of whom attended Georgia and ran track there. He watched part of one practice Friday and the entire Bulldogs scrimmage Saturday.

But this was not a football visit. Rather, this was a fact-finding mission.

ATHENS, Ga. -- For most high school players, the end of practice means they get a break from the incessant nagging and ceaseless instruction of their coaches. They go home, eat dinner, study and enjoy the respite until the whistles start blowing next time. For ESPN Watch List safety Quincy Wilson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./University School), that is not the case.

Wilson’s father is the defensive coordinator and the defensive backs coach at the University School, so Wilson jokes that he gets no respite.

“Oh no, there’s no break, there’s no break,” Wilson said. “Monday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Yeah, I get it at practice, before practice, after practice, in the car, at the dinner table ...”

The talented junior laughed about the nonstop instruction but he also credited his father with making him the player he is today -- one of the most coveted safeties in Florida.

Last season, running back Taj Griffin (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern) says he only had about six or seven carries per game for the Indians, but the 5-foot-9, 175-pound athlete was still able to tally 645 yards and seven touchdowns.

He followed it up with an outstanding showing at the Atlanta SPARQ Combine, posting a 4.43 40-yard dash, 4.15 shuttle, and a 40.9-inch vertical jump. The 40-yard dash and vertical jump marks were the best by a running back so far on the 2013 combine circuit. Since then, he has picked up four offers, including Missouri, North Carolina and UCLA.

Not bad for a sophomore.

Still, Griffin admits he was not prepared when his head coach, Kyle Hockman, approached him between classes Tuesday.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Outside linebacker Jacob Pugh (Tallahassee, Fla./Godby) isn’t exactly sure of how many offers he has. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior has not counted them. Once he had received over 30 offers to the top programs in the nation, there really seemed no point in doing so. Pugh is more concerned about the five that he has on top.

SUWANEE, Ga. -- ESPN Watch List prospect Nick Glass (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) has been committed to the University of Georgia for almost a year now, yet schools from coast to coast are hot on the Bulldogs’ heels trying to reel in the 6-foot-2, 203-pound safety.

Bryson Allen-Williams (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove) started his weekend with a visit to the University of Alabama on Saturday. He finished it as the MVP of the linebackers at the VTO Sports Prep 100 camp in Atlanta on Sunday.

The visit itself marked his first time in Tuscaloosa since the ESPN Watch List linebacker earned a scholarship offer at the Crimson Tide’s first junior day.

“It went great,” Allen-Williams said. “I got to sit down and talk to Coach [Kirby] Smart and Coach [Nick] Saban. I personally spent a lot of one-on-one time with the coaches. That’s something I really enjoyed about it.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Considering that running back Jacques Patrick (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) is only in his second year of high school but already has 25 scholarship offers, the case can be made that Patrick is one of the most coveted prospects in the Class of 2015.

ATHENS, Ga. -- ESPN Watch List wide receiver Demarre Kitt (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek) recently cut his mammoth offer list down to a top-15 group of schools that he will consider.

“It got crazy at one point with almost everybody that offered me trying to talk to me,” Kitt said. “So I had to cut my list down to 15 schools. After spring practice I will cut it down to eight or 10. At the end of summer I will do five and then go from there.”
