FSU Seminoles: Stacy Coley

As it is virtually every year on national signing day, there were some big hits for Florida State, and there were a few tough misses, too. Overall, Jimbo Fisher and his new-look coaching staff have to consider the Class of 2013 a big win given the immense chaos that has ensued with six assistants leaving since Dec. 1. Most key commitments held strong, and a few late arrivals turned a solid class into one that cracked the top 10 in ESPN's national rankings.

Of course, rankings aren't everything. A lot of the success or failure of a class is based on a team's needs, and on that front, there were also a few highlights and a few noticeable problems. Here's how it breaks down.

Stacy Coley (Oakland Park, Fla./Northeast) is the latest college recruit to come down to Florida State and Miami (Fla.). This round goes to the Hurricanes.

The 6-foot-1 Under Armour All-American, No. 47 in the ESPN 150 and fourth-best receiver nationally, visited both rivals then made the announcement Wednesday morning on ESPNU.

What is the impact of Coley’s decision?

Signing day primer: Florida State

Who is leaving: Florida State is losing three top-flight defensive ends to the NFL draft this season, led by draft-eligible junior Bjoern Werner. Senior Tank Carradine's stock would have been much higher if not for a late knee injury in the regular season finale against Florida. Brandon Jenkins, who was lost for most of the 2012 season because of a foot injury, will also be heading to the pros.

The offensive line only loses one player, junior Menelik Watson, but it is a big one. He's likely to go in the first couple of rounds and had a major impact for Florida State in just one season.

Xavier Rhodes is the lone corner departing, but it's also a big one. Aside from Rhodes, the secondary will return largely intact.

Florida State will host their second crop of January official visitors beginning on Friday. While it isn't as large or as important of a weekend as the previous one, some of these visitors could likely end up in the haul on national signing day.

Here’s a look at those who are scheduled to be in Tallahassee.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- When the scoreboard finally showed triple zeros inside Tropicana Field at the Under Armour All-America Game on Friday, Stacy Coley's (Oakland Park, Fla./Northeast) high school career had drawn to a close.

Even though Coley's team ended up on the losing end, it wasn't about points. Coley had made it. He was an all-star, a truly elite player.

And now with just a few weeks standing between him and national signing day, it's time to say goodbye to prep football and hello to the next level.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla – ESPN 150 wide receiver Stacy Coley (Oakland Park, Fla./Northeast) isn’t big on social media. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior doesn’t even have a Twitter account or a Facebook page.

But someone posing as Coley has occasionally been known to pop up on both sites with some big news on the uncommitted wide receiver. In the past “Stacy Coley” has listed his favorites and even made a “commitment” to Florida State a few weeks ago.

The real Coley is aware of the accounts and thinks it’s one of his classmates.

Christmas, for many, is a time to gather with close friends and family, eat way too much, catch up on all the happenings and exchange gifts.

But, for a moment, let's imagine what presents would reside underneath a Florida State fan's Christmas tree on Tuesday morning.

With Ryan Green (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg Catholic) already on board, ESPN 150 running back Alex Collins (Plantation, Fla./South Plantation) would be the perfect icing on the cake at the tailback position. At one point, FSU fans would have expected to unwrap this gift with little surprise, but the road to his signature has become less clear.

NoleNation addresses questions from the fan base about Florida State recruiting as we head toward national signing day.

ktruba asks, "What committed recruits out there are the most critical to FSU at snagging for the 2013 class?"

Dowlar: For me, the top remaining guy is Matthew Thomas. He is an instant impact guy at the linebacker position and Florida State has been all over him for a long time now. The Seminoles are probably the leader in the clubhouse, and from that position, they can't afford to lose him.

ESPN 150 wide receiver Stacy Coley (Oakland Park, Fla./Northeast) received his Under Armour All-America Game jersey on Wednesday, but the 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior isn’t ready to reveal many details of his recruitment.

With Northeast heading to the playoffs as district champions, Coley will likely wait until after his season before he figures out his future.

"Right now I’m still interested in all of the schools that have offered me," Coley said. "I haven’t made any decisions beyond that."

At first glance, this year's Florida State recruiting class lacks the star power of the two before it. That isn't to say it is void of quality, though. But Seminoles do have some offensive firepower on the list, notably four-star prospects Ryan Green, Isaiah Jones, and Levonte Whitfield. In the trenches, which has been an area of focus for the Seminoles coaching state in recent cycles, offensive linemen Austin Golson and Ira Denson and defensive end Davin Bellamy have them off to a good start.

Sitting at 17 total commitments, there is still work to do. But fortunately for FSU, there are some excellent options.

In a trend that is running opposite of Florida State's results on the gridiron, the Seminoles have lost two commitments -- wide receiver Tony Stevens (Orlando, Fla./Evans) and tight end Christian Morgan (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian) -- in the last 24 hours.

Both cases, however, appear isolated and not because of some failure related to the coaching staff.

NoleNation takes a quick look at each case:

ATHENS, Ga. -- There was an abundance of talent expected at Sanford Stadium on Friday for Dawg Night, but few could have predicted that ESPN 150 wide receiver Stacy Coley (Oakland Park, Fla./Northeast) would show up for the event. That is because Coley is fairly quiet regarding his recruitment.

Having made the trip to Athens with several standouts from his area who were competing, Coley was able to get a close look at how the University of Georgia coaching staff operates on the field.

"I enjoyed watching the coaches work with the guys and explain things," Coley said. "I enjoyed it here."
